I'm new to Snow Leopard and as yet have no clue on how Time machine works on my old macbook pro. However have been told to get an external hdd to work with it.
Amazon has the Buffalo 500GB usb (no mains) one, sub £50. It's nice and small too, important in a small flat (but so is reliability)
Ideally I suppose I should get a 1TB drive, but I have about 100GB of data at present, mostly photos and videos, that I need to back up, then delete a lot from my MBP as its 120GB hdd is too full.
Any views on the Buffalo or anything good that is sub £70 ideally (certainly sub £100) and as reliable as anything out there and syncs plug n play with a mac? thanks

yep it's pretty good to use to backup all your files.
the best way to explain how to use it is to watch this vid
to use time machine all you need is any external hard drive (a 500GB one should be fine but a 1TB one will obviously be able to store more files and further back in time) all you need to do when you buy it is format it for mac which you can see how to in this vid, after the hard drive is formatted then turn time machine and let it back up for the first time, if you then leave it plugged into the computer backups would then be fully automatic.
