Cant open a bank account

I signed up for an IVA about 18 months ago, and as a result had to close my bank account....this was ok in the short term as i used my partners account to deposit my monthly wage.
However, we recently split and i also lost my job due to redundency so could no longer use the account.
I am having severe trouble in trying to open up a new account anywhere due to a severe lack of identification....i have no drivers licence, my passport is out of date and lost...the only things i have is my P60, birth certificate and national insurance number. Due to the fact i am living with my parants, i also have no proof of address, and i know that this is also going to be a problem when i start work again as my prospective employer will want proof of who i am! I really dont know what to do.

Have you tried the coop? Give them a call and ask them if you can open a cashminder account, they are really nice and will tell you if you can, they will check the credit file agencies but only to verify your address (ER) I opened our joint account the day we declared BR and told them that was the case xx (the credit agencies had not been told by then) within 7 days we had cards login details the lot. The government (and Barclays funny enough) say that you are entitled to 1 bank account. Other then taht try yorkshire building society internet saver you only get a cash card but you can pay bills etc and hve your money paid into it, only draw back is that you have to transfer money into electronically ie wages would have to be paid into it by bacs or chaps
If you woke up this morning congratulations, you have another chance :j
  • Thanks, ive tried the coop already and it was a no go due to lack of i.d, that was despite me pleading my circumstances...i will try the yorkshire building society, thanks for the advice.

No sweat, they gave me a savings account and I am AD BR :T all they did was an un-recorded check to see if I was on the er :A:A good luck xx or try ING direct

We did not have to have ID for the cashminder try again (tell them you might be going BR)

I didn't have to provide any id for the coop and I'm not even on the electoral role. I suppose its because you've recently moved house and don't have anything relating to you on your credit file at that address.

Can you renew your passport, get a rental agreement (you can pick these up from WH Smith) etc to start getting some identification.

I did not need any ID either but my wife did when we changed it to a joint account.

Nope, I never have been and never will be on the electoral role and it has never prevented me opening any accounts or credit cards. :D They could easily identify me by all the credit cards and bank accounts I had on my credit file!

I think the reason Dan is having problems is that he doesn't have any entries on his file against his current address nor is he on the electoral register so they cannot identify him.

Dan - another idea - you could get yourself on the electoral register at your current address.

  • Currently living temp at my parents, so not on the ER, just looked on the yorkshire site, and if not on the ER i will need some other proof of address, which is a bit difficult, as am techniclly homeless.
