I'd go for an older AUDI... Avant...cavernous, great build quality or an older v70, I've owned both, still have a Volvo, maintenance costs arn't too bad if you use a independent and I get 30+ mpg...0

Ford has no Real comparison compared to the 'Venerable' Volvo.
Don't care much for the new shape Volvo's.Thomson 757 Man0

After years of use in a Zafira they are fairly roomy, handle OK, brakes are very good, they do roll a bit when you really try but the diesel engines are so bad that I could never recommend one, though they may be fine with the DPF removed and the ECU remapped to suit.
But when it comes down to value and space, either any MK3 Mondeo estate or an older MK4 estate, they are spot on, though don't forget cars like the Octavia estate.
All these are good if not fashionable family estates.

I recommend an Omega estate converted to LPG. There's a flaw with this recomendation, that they are probably all too old by now, but if you found one already converted, that would be great, because although there is an LPG tank in the back there is tons of room on those cars. The replacement is the insignia, now I have no experience with them at all, but looking at its picture it seems to have sacrificed boot space for looks which is really silly considering why people buy estates. I used to get about 700miles on a motorway journey on 113 litres of gas (a single tank full) in my 2.0 l Omegas. The mathematican in you would convert that to
28mpg LPG and an equivalent of
 56.5 mpg petrol
 60mpg diesel
If you can equal or beat those mpg figures on a modern car then fine might aswell go with the modern car, but equally, the more thrifty modern cars would be better on LPG to start with so the figures would need recalculating.
Look into buying an already converted LPG car.0
