Advice from carpet fitters please!

I'm having 4 bedrooms and stairs/landing carpeted. Half of the job has been done (3 beds) and I am concered about the work done. I'd appreciate some advice before I allow any further work to continue.

Underlay
The 3 bedrooms all have different underlay (one room has black airtred, one room has similar underlay to airtred but not as thick and red, the other room has plastic covered foamy stuff).

Is it normal to put different underlay down on the same job (all going onto floorboards)? I would have throught it should all be the same so it wears the same. The carpet shop has said it shouldn't have been done but he will make an allowance on the price as we paid for good quality stuff. Would I be better asking for it to be changed & will it affect the fit if the carpet is refitted?

Grease marks
bedroom 2 had a couple of black grease marks on the carpet. I got the carpet shop round and he tried to get it off with washing up liquid. It's still there slightly and there are marks from where he rubbed it. he left some stuff to try with the proviso that we test it on some spare.

I don't want to be getting stains out myself should I ask for it to be changed?

Gripper rods
I noticed bedroom 3 & 4 had some glue on the skirting board (it was freshly painted recently so I know it was them). After investigating further I found that there are sections in both rooms where gripper was not used and the carpet was glued to the underlay. There's no reason for this - no pipes etc. The carpet shop have said they will get fitter to put some down. But again will it affect fit having it pulled up?

Any advice please????

Thanks

Dunno what they're playing at, it all sounds very odd - especially the glue  Mr troo will know all about this, I'll get him to reply later, after work.

  • With regards to underlay, buy the best you can afford, and ensure that is what is fitted. If it were me, I ask that they start again, and use the underlay you originally specified. Regarding the use of glue, it sounds like a bit of a bodge to me. The only place our fitter used glue was on the back of the carpet where it had been stiched to go around the bottom step of the staircase. Lastly, the grease stain. What with everything else, I would ask that it either be professionally cleaned, or that the carpet be replaced.

We had gripperods glued downstairs as the nails wouldn't go into the concrete floor because of the stones in the concrete , but if its upstairs i don't see why it couldn't of been nailed in, to be honest it sounds like a right bodge job, maybe the fiter is on the fiddle and using leftover underlay, and keeping the decent stuf for himself, i would ask for it to be all refitted properly

EDIT: Just re read your post they actually glued the carpet down and didnt use gripprods does sound very dodgy indeed
  • I wouldn't put up with that myself. Sort them out. It's your hard earned cash paying for it - you want it done properly and to stand the test of time. It's you right to have to done properly.
  • Underlay used throughout the job should be the same unless for heavy duty area such as stairs. Sounds like the fitter has been using up 'spare underlay' hoping that you wouldn't notice! What did you pay for?

Re fitting, Gripper should be used throughout - insist on this so that the carpet is fitted at the correct tension. NB Gripper can be pined into concrete with concrete pins - only for stone or very powdery/uneven floor is it necessary to glue Gripper.

Any marks on the carpet should have been shown to you prior to the fitting being started - occasional grease marks from the manufacturing process do some times occur - and often can be 'cut out' during the laying process. I suspect that the fitter made the grease marks because he didn't show them to you before starting!

From your description of the job so far, I'd be extremely unhappy.

Insist on the underlay being replaced throughout with what you have paid for. Eg Cloud 9

The carpet in bedroom 2 should be replaced - don't let them get away with cleaning it!

Insist they send a different fitter to refit all the rooms to your level of satisfaction - I suspect that none of the rooms will have been fitted correctly. Tell them to replace the carpets if they can't get them refitted to your satisfaction.

Insist on the glue being removed/cleaned from your skirting board.

NB If this had been one of our fitters, he wouldn't be any more!

    Good luck

Have you paid at all? If not get them to rip the carpets out and look for someone else. Wouldnt tolerate this sort of rubbish in my shop....Cowboys, and you dont get grease off with fairy liquid, laugh and a half this is. You paid for professional work and you arent getting it. God knows what the stairs are going to look like if they cant get the easy stuff right. If you paid by credit card ring them up and tell them you want a refund
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!

    Mr troo says -

(Assuming you purchased the underlay from the same shop as the carpet)
Don't take an allowance for the underlay unless they can guarantee in writing that it is of equivalent or higher quality than the one specified originally and that the performance of the carpet will not be impaired by using the underlay which is now fitted. The wrong underlay could have a significant effect to the appearance and performance of the carpet as well as the feel. In some cases the type of underlay used can even effect the guarantee from the carpet manufacturer.
Assuming that the fitter is is of a competent standard, uplifting and refitting the carpet in virtually all cases should be OK.

How do you know the underlay is different? Did you see it or is it because it feels different in each room? If each room has the same carpet, it should feel the same. If they're all different, it might be because the carpets have different backings. Having said that, fitters have been known to use up bits from other jobs and gradually save themselves enough to make a bit of money on the side

Washing up liquid  Anyone who works with carpet should know you DO NOT PUT SOAP ONTO CARPET AND YOU DO NOT RUB. Ask for a replacement.

Can't understand the glue at all - you'll need new underlay for bedrooms 3 & 4 and get them to clean the glue off the skirting boards and use gripper properly.

To be honest, I'd get them round to rip the lot out and get a refund.
