Going from 30 to 80 mile round trip to work... What Car?

Yes, but my point was how diesel seems to be increasing at a faster rate than both petrol and LPG0

I was moved job location years ago and went from a 15 mile round trip 5 days a week to a 50 mile round trip 6 days a week. Not quick as much as you..
I got my hands on a 3 years old Diesel Skoda Octavia Estate, at the time it had 100,000 miles on the clock with FSH. Cost me less than £5k.
Never got less than 50mpg, sitting on the motorways following the trucks I managed 73mpg a couple of times, but mostly on motorways would get 65mpg+
Sold it on at 186,000 miles as bought a brand new car.. wish I hadn't as new car was rubbish (was bough back in the end), and there was nothing really wrong with the Skoda.
Never failed to start, clutch went at 145k (I think it was), and everything else was normal wear and tear items and general servicing..0 -
Most high mileage drivers I know, couriers, private hire drivers etc. Just buy ex lease cars at three years old, with say 80k or 90k on them, they are worth pennies compared to a new or low mileage car, you can then put the miles on it for three years and repeat.
Doing the best part of 25k a year means your biggest expense other than fuel will be depreciation.
Motorpoint sells some nice low mileage cars, but this means they are more expensive than high milers.
Let the lease sompany take the depreciation.
If you go to CarGiant, yes my old favourite, you will find loads of nice ex lease cars.
Audis, BMWs and Fords etc.
Loads on nice Audi A6s for peanuts for example.

High miles, but two years old, almost certainly done most of its miles on the motorway, don't know how much it would have cost new, but would expect around £28k. Last of the old shape.

Even has an auto box. High miles for the age, but since it cost around £30k with these options, leather and DSG autobox, then a good proposition for the price of a bottom of the range Mondeo or mid range Octavia.0 -

How large or executive does the car have to be as a polo blue motion is quite economical alongside the seat ibiza ecomotive and skoda fabia greenline but if something larger then the mondeo/focus is quite economical as well.0

I guess the trouble with high-end used cars is the price of parts if something goes wrong.
I really just require a decent sized, reliable family car with a sensible aproach to finance based on mileage etc. See first thread post...0 -

True, but the Clio my wife got from them last year, actually late 2009 to be exact, was nearly a grand cheaper than the same car at an independant dealer and almost 2 grand cheaper than an almost identical car at a Renault dealer.
At the end of the day is you want cheap ex-fleet cars that is the place to go, if saving thousands of pounds but you are put off by a £91 indemnity fee then that is your decision.
Remember that I seen a lot of cars that my wife was looking at go through the auctions and they all made the same money as the same car was listed for at CarGiant.
CG used to source cars all over the place, but now they are so big they have special direct deals from lots of different lease companies, and they tend to buy entire fleets at a time.
They even had a few UK model Cadillacs in there over the last few months.0 -

The engine and box on the Audi A6 is pretty much normal VAG fodder, same as Golf etc, though avoid the 2.7 tdi as that can be very expensive when it breaks.
My BiL is on his third Audi in the last 8 or 9 years, he has never had a breakdown, he now has a new shape Audi A4 with the same 2.0 TDi engine, one thing about the 2.0 TDi it really needs to be remapped to get the best as it has a bit of a delay when pulling away, which is removed when remapped.
Most people I know with these new generation Audis find them no more expensive to run than a small hatchback.0 -
Might be worth looking at Vauxhalls or Kias due to their huge warranties.
Means lots of years of worry free motoring.0
