I have no backup mechanism at the moment and am sorely tempted by this offer. I am not too familiar with external drives so would be grateful if someone can confirm if this really is the great deal it appears to be. I plan to use this just for a weekly backup so am not to worried if it is a little bit noisy - although someone already indicated it isn't.

That doesn't really help me!!... but thanks for the post. What are the pros and cons then please. My main suspicion has been triggered by the fact that I have never considered it possible for PC World to offer a real bargain (bar a lucky spot on the manager's specials).0

Feival - The Seagates sold by PCWorld are on sale at other stores at considerably higher prices. Doesn't seem to be a problem with quality - the drive itself is ok, and the external unit is fanless, so perhaps a bit bigger and heavier than some other models but a bit quieter too. It lacks a few features you get on much more expensive models, like auto on/off with the PC. Many people far more experienced than me seem to be buying them as the £ per Gb is very good and they always need extra space!. Your PC will need a USB2 connection, although it will work on USB1.1 but much much slower. PCWorld are often very pricey for much of their stock, but they do often have good (heavily advertised) deals when they buy in bulk - it's their equivalent of the loss leader baked beans in supermarkets
As with any drive, external, internal and regardless of make, don't use it as your only data storage, so backup to another drive and/or to DVD/CD too (at least once & keep a copy away from home!)0 -
I've just bought one of these from PC World and they're excellent. I literally just plugged it into a USB port on my Win2000 PC and the drive appeared in Explorer. It's quiet, it's fast and it offers more storage than I need (300Gb usable space).
A bargain IMO0 -
Oh bummer. I cant resist this, shall I or shan't i!0

Ordered mine today on the web from Currys - quidco 3% cashback and used the 10% code available in the vouchers section of this forum. Well pleased and will be delivered to me in effect for free! Thanks again to all.0
