What you should have spent your £40 on, was a county court summons (small claims court) against Comet.

Let them go to Northampton county court and explain to a judge why they reneged on the Sale of Goods Act.0 -

it is worth quoting this to acer ,my brothers plasma telly developed a fault two weeks ago,it is 18 months old,sent it to sony and they said it was beyond economical repair and out of warranty,i told him to ring them back and say under the new eu directive all electrical goods are now covered by 6 year pro rata warranty.(i read this on a different forum,dont know if its true).

That's not quite accurate. the 6 years is the time that you have to bring a claim to court, not how long goods should last for. the thread posted above has a useful link http://www.dti.gov.uk/consumers/fact-sheets/page24700.html on this matter which have just had a good look at :
