Gas and Electricity bills. !!!!!!????

How can they explain this!

Just had gas and electricty bills in. I currently pay £130/month gas and £30/month electricity.

My gas bill that I've just received says that over the last year i've used 20328kWh of gas and that if my usage continues that i'll use £762 worth of gas next year. So, if i've paid 12x £130 then thats £1560. So why if my usage is £762 and i've paid £1560 is my account only in credit by £52??? (and i never had a huge outstanding debt to clear just befaore anyone asks that)

Then in the same letter their tellin me that they want to increase my Direct Debit to £136/month?????

On the other hand, i've just had my electricity bill in from the same company and its saying that if my usage continues the same that they estimate that next year i'll use £468 worth of electricty. So, if i'm paying £30/month then 12x£30 is £360. Why then if I'm paying £360 a year and using £468 are they telling me IN THE SAME BILL that they want to lower my direct debit from £30/month to £18/month.

Neither of the above makes any sense to me. Tried calling them yesterday but their not open until today.

I just don't get it!

I'm currently with Scottish Gas btw!

Do you also pay a standing charge?

when was the last time you used a comparison site to confirm you are on the best tariff for your typical useage?

your gas useage at over 20k kWH is certainly above average...

Paying a standing charge won't make any difference.

3.75p per kwh is reasonable for gas.

20,000kwh may be more than average but that's what evobaz uses. Evobaz may have a poorly insulated house, have many occupants or may like the heating on 21. It's reasonable at only £2 per day.

The question was why does Scottish want to increase the direct debit amount when it does not reflect the usage?

I don't know the answer without seeing the bill. I have never been able to understand where they get the figure from. I think they invent it that's why I have gone from monthly direct debit to whole bill quarterly direct debit. At least the amount they take for me equals the elec/gas that I have used and isn't sitting in their bank account. That tariff may cost more so you need to see if it's worth it or not.

You'll need to ring them and make them reduce it or just cancel it and pay on receipt of bill.

    Average annual household consumption is:
    gas: 20500 kWh
    electricity: 3300kWh

So nothing particularly surprising about your usage. (Electric is a little higher than average, but then I see you are a night owl who posts at 4 o'clock in the morning!)

20328 kWh would cost about £762 per year.

You say "So, if i've paid 12x £130 then thats £1560". But have you actually paid 12 installments at that price? If not, that would explain why you have little credit at present.

If you really have paid almost twice as much for gas as you have consumed, your statements should indicate where the remaining money has gone. Use of over £1500 worth of gas in a year would certainly be high.

    Now to the electric.

You say they state "if my usage continues the same that they estimate that next year i'll use £468 worth of electricty" and that you currently pay £30 pm (which would be £360 per year) and they plan to reduce that amount to just £18 pm.
Have you built up any credit on your electricity account at present? If so, that could be why they are planning on reducing the monthly payment (to reduce the credit)

As Joyful says, if still confused, call the supplier who I am sure will explain things to you. :)
