i started a sales job in september and i am provided with a company car citreon c5 1.6 hdi........ i have a tracker in my car and from 8am until 5pm it is classed as business miles

i pay the diesel and the work give me 11p per mile........ however this is far from enough ... i have pointed this out and they state its a tax office thing

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cars/advisory_fuel_current.htm

total farce updated twice a year last time 1st dec next time is june

for the record the car is a 59 plate and its getting 40 mpg nothing like 45 to 55... and i advised citreon and they dont care... my boss 2 months agreed to adjust the miles accordingly so i get 14p per mile however in the period diesel was 122.9 per litre and by tomorrow will be 1.27p min

i have suggested a company fuel card however was advised a no no....

like many other employees jobs are few and far between and i dont want ot eattle on all the time however seems ridiculous it costs me to carry out my daily job.... really cheesing me off

any suggestions

Modify your driving. Legend has it that diesels don’t really come up to manufacturers fuel mileages until they have done about 15,000 miles.
I have no idea whether that is true but when my wife had a diesel Motability Astra it cost us a fortune compared to a petrol equivalent.
However a colleague had a C5 diesel, 2l I think, as a company car and, once he had modified his driving, compared to how we used to thrash pool cars, he was very happy.

I treat company cars as if they were my own. In town driving etc max I drive is 40 -45 mph and motorway never over 70 mph

Try 60mph then. It will take you longer to get where you're going obviously, and that costs your employer more too because of your time costs. Ce la vie.

Your consumption seems high. I am getting 49 mpg in my 2006 VAUXHALL ZAFIRA 1.9D CDTI 120ACTIVE (according to the trip computer) on general commuting, which is probably better that the official stats. I don't drive very aggressively but I'm no Sunday driver either.

  • WhatCar is always a good source of info.
    (Sorry, can't post links yet)

Cost per mile is 11-16p (Depending on model). So your company offering 14p/mile seems like a good compromise. Drive carefully and you're quids in. Although WhatCar do state 56mpg. Heavy foot perhaps?

I have a citroen diesel, not the model you've got, but a physically large 1600 HDi. My dashboard read out shows me that in all the time I've owned it I've averaged over 60mpg.
  • cant you claim the difference between what your employer gives you per mile and what the governement have as a standard (40p) i think and offset against your tax?

No, not when it is a company car. The 40ppm is only if you provide your own car.

    any suggestions

Doesn't this give rise to a 2p per mile taxable benefit?
The only thing that is constant is change.
