My advice would be to 1st get the provisional licence

Then book a few lessons with a driving instructor, they will tell your husband if he is ready to do the test.

The driving instructor will then have the details/phone numbers/prices etc to apply for both parts of the test plus your husband can then use the instructors car for the test.

I would have thought the provisional licence would take 2-3 weeks to arrive.
    2-3 weeks to complete lessons
1 month to get a theory test
6 weeks to get a practical test

The above is based on time scales when I passed my test.

Two minor endorsements or one major offence during the first 2 years of passing and he will need to do it all again.

Thank you very much. Absolutely bang on (without any nonsense). Just what I wanted to know.

yes agreed. A lot of ppl lack lane discipline/awareness in India and some of them have their own rules. Does that mean ALL Indians create havoc on UK roads?? How many drunk UK citizens get killed/kill others in accidents?

My take on this is, lane discipline or any discipline is a matter of personal principle. Awareness yes. But thats the reason driving tests exist !

FYI, a lot of us with driving experience in "less developed" countries find driving in the UK much more relaxed and enjoyable because of the rules and road discipline. Dont assume everyone from a "less developed" country lacks/detests discipline. We have no council housing no free NHS. We work very hard to come up in life (fighting strong competition at every stage of education) and it obviously needs a lot of discipline.

Where has anyone mentioned Indians create havoc on British roads??

Don't they have driving test's in India then?

I believe the driving test in India is a bit of a joke at times.

There was journalist who wrote about it- think it was in Mumbai, and it consisted of driving 500m down the road and back. 4 other candidates were in the car and despite them not driving everyone passed. :rotfl:

Come to think of it was that story in Clarkson's Motorworld?

    I have, several times infact

"We don't drive with a death wish"

Implied than in India they drive with pretty much no safety/road awareness given the fact i highlighted the comment i was refering to

Doesn't make any mention that Indians cause a disaster on English roads so climb down from your high horse

That's right; bait the OP with your rudeness and subtle racism....then have a pop when she's had enough.

Your like most of the trolls who now inhabit this once fine forum; a lisping inadequate. :D

No wonder all the decent people who were happy to hand out advice have disappeared.

How does his Indian License allow him to drive here?

Have a look at the Government website: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/DrivingInGbOnAForeignLicence/DG_4022561

Your husband can drive on his Indian licence for 12 months after he becomes resident. If the licence is in English, there should be no need for an International Driving Permit to accompany it. The IDP is merely a translation - as Gene_Hunt pointed out. However, he will need to apply for a provisional licence as the starting point to passing the UK test and getting a full UK licence.

If he has not passed a test within 12 months he will need to revert to provisional status. I would advise that he book a few lessons with an instructor. Learning to pass the UK driving test is not necessarily the same as learning to drive.

    Best wishes
    David
