Hi techies,

Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to access my u.k. isp, using my lap top whilst in Spain?
Can this be done using a mobile phone?
If so how do I go about it, and is it costly?

Cheers

It's unlikely you could access your UK ISP from Spain, even if you can, the charges would be high. The same point about cost applies to using your mobile.

You can use a local ISP in Spain, a quick search returned the following:

I have not used these, so I can't comment on their reliability etc. I'm sure there are others if you search as well.

    Thanks Nikmack,
What I should have pointed out was that I do not have a landline in Spain and would need to use a mobile, it could either be a spanish or UK mobile. Do you know if this is possible, and how would I do it?
As you have probably gathered by now, I'm no good with techie stuff.

If you must use your mobile to connect, you should get a Spanish SIM card.

You would need to connect the phone to the laptop either via a cable (which usually comes with the phone) or using Bluetooth if both phone and laptop support. You then use the phone software (again usually supplied with phone) to install the phone as a modem and then use this to dial. It will probably be painfully slow though.

Don't even think about using your UK SIM abroad, it would be very expensive.

If you have a wireless enabled laptop, finding a hotspot would be a much better idea.

  • When I holiday in Spain I go to the local public libary, they provide a free "hotspot" - and its air conditioned! Maybe its the same in your holiday area give it a try.

  • You could try a 3g data card, available on contract from all the operators. If you can get 3g reception this does give something like 312 broadbandish speeds. I use o2 3g card fairly extensively, but the roaming charges can be high.

I would go for the hotspot option too. It can even be worth trying to connect where you are staying, if it is a residential area (not tourist based) you may be able to piggy back some elses un secured network!
