How do you use a 3G phone to create wifi?

I use a Nokia 5800 Music Express with JoikuSpot installed (£4 on Ovi Store offer when I got it). This makes the phone a wi-fi hotspot that I use to connect any of my I-Pod Touch, Netbook or laptop when I am away from home. JoikuSpot is an good tethering programme that enables me to make better use of my "unlimited" internet access.
It has made my mobile dongle surplus to requirements and I shall be dumping that service in the near future (JoikuSpot was not available when I took out the Orange £5/month/500MB contract some 14 months ago).“When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.
But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”

Few years back I used a Nokia E51 as a wi-fi hotspot, it's not a 'smart phone' as such but I used JoikuSpot for Symbian. Worked well, good little business phone too. Unlocked E51s seem to go for about £75 on Ebay.
I have 'a friend' with a jailbroken iPhone used as a wifi hot-spot to their ipad and there's never been any issues of blowing through the 500Mb allowance using email/web. Obviously, streaming Sky Sports for hours isn't sensible...0 -
I will only really need it for light browsing and/or email checking when out and about. So don't think it will be a massive data download requirement.0

Forgot about JoikuSpot. You can use that basically with any symbian phone with 3g and wifi, which will probably be somewhat cheaper secondhand on ebay than a San Francisco.0

Cheapest way might be to buy a wifi only iPad (saving of £100'ish) and buy a Three Mifi £50. Therefore £50 up, then buy 3GB / 3 month sims off Amazon / eBay they are about £8-£10 (I got one for my Nephew for £8), so that's about £3 a month for 1GB of data and keep your current mobile / tariff.
You can unlock the mifi if you want it on a different network.0 -
hmm- so it looks as if it wouldn't be much more expensive just to get the 3g ipad straight off. If I went for the wifi ipad - I'd still have to buy myself a 3g phone and plan.
It's annoying that I can't just get the wifi one - and see how much time I need it outside a wifi hotspot - then if it was loads - I could upgrade to a 3g one.
I'm swithering about buying the 3g incase it turns out I don't need it very often.
Check out prices on ebay or the Apple refurb store - you might get a bargain, considering Ipad 2 is expected to be announced this month.Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0
