Prepayment meter but still receive bills?

Hi there,

Sorry if this has already been covered but could not find it anywhere...

I am with npower for my gas and electric and have a prepayment meter. I am all very new to living on my own (with my partner but I deal with all the bills etc), so please forgive me if this seems obvious!

If I have a prepayment meter for my electric and gas, why do I receive bills still? Surely you 'top-up' to receive the gas and electricity, this is therefore your payment for it, why am I getting bills from them still which are then bit by bit taken out of the amount I top up each time to then pay this bill?

I have just received the gas bill of £43.43, we have only lived here since end of August 2010 and the only gas we use is through the gas fire in the living room of the 1 bed flat we privately rent (we have no central heating), of which we only started using this in say near end of October 2010 - this seems a lot in any case let alone us still topping up on the prepayment meter...?

I hope this makes sense and someone can help explain it to me?

Thank you very much

Did you have a credit meter in before the pp meter was installed? If so this may be a debt for the amount used in between.

If the PP meter was there when you moved in did you give readings from the meter? If not they may be billing you for some of the previous tenants consumption.

Did you get a new card/key? If not please check your payments are not going on to the previous tenants accounts. Also if the meter was not reset there may be debt on them. Check screen 27 on the gas and S on the electric for debt.

Last but not least check the supplier definitely has you down as having prepayment meters and you are on the correct tariff.

You should phone them up and ask them.
  • Thank you Joyful.

Yes, I will give them a call to check anyway, thanks t0rtoise.

We had both pp meters checked, read, the debt from the previous tenant wiped and then reset and were given a new gas card.

I will give them a call anyway to clear things up but just wanted to check that if you are paying pp then you shouldn't be being billed as well.
