Ok, I think lordhaldon is trying to tell everyone they are safe and that's not the case. .

Thank you. What I am saying is that there are many good IFA's out there. I appreciate that it may be difficult finding one, but have faith and confidence in your choice.

Thanks for all the posts - and I mean ALL the posts. If nothing else, we had a good chat. Thank you.

What's that got to do with what you admit is a "jaundice view of financial planners"?

How is my post an admission? It ends with ? therefore is a question, not an admission.

Why do the British public have a jaundice view of financial planners?

So, do you don't think the British have a jaundiced view?

What did you actually mean when you started this thread?

Is it a double bluff and you believe it's a fair view?

Maybe I need clarification of what you meant by the question.

My apologies. Perhaps, I should have said "....appear to have....." Would that have been clearer for you? (Question mark) And the various posts seem to "appear" to answer my QUESTION! As I have said many times, I am not an adviser of any kind and my experience of my IFA is very good and some of the post of people like dunstonh confirm it for me. However reading some of the posts on this website caused me to question the view of the British public. I used the website to express a view and to comment. The last time I looked it was still a free society and was enabled to do that. I didn't mean to offend anyone and if I have, my mosts sincere apologies. I cannot, do not, and will not earn anything from this website. In the highly unlikely event that I should, I will treble the amount and give to charity.

To answer your question to me, Yes! My view is that it would appear that the great British public do have a jaundice view of their adviser, IFA or otherwise. Great shame and to be highly controversial, website's of this genre, whilst doing great good, assist in the proliferation of this view.

This thread seems to have been little more than a vaguely defined question from a poster who appears to prefer to select who can or cannot comment. Added to which they have thrown insults at some and taken the opportunity to blow smoke up one poster's !!! (or donkey if you prefer to work out what the filter stopped).

    Very odd.

OH, and like every other poster on the internet, they appear to be fabulously wealthy and successful.

So last year for example I put money into NSI savings certificates at RPI+1%.
This has turned out well, but clearly there is no interest in an IFA recommending such a product as they don't get paid.

My parents have a very varied investment portfolio, part of her investments are Premium Bonds. She fully understands they are not a great investment but enjoys receiving her £50 prizes each month (She sometimes gets a few in a month.

She uses these for her treats.

Her IFA who is my boss fully endorses her Premium Bonds as he they fit in with her investments and knows the enjoyment they give her.

They have known each other for a long and have a good relationship, she has other investments that she has made direct with the company as they are were available through advisers. She often takes these in and picks his brain on them for which he is more than happy to give his advice. He has recommended some of these too her after reading about them and realising they would suit them.

She also enjoys having a chat about her shares and the market situation. It's a two way chat with both of them giving their opinions on the market. My boss has mentioned to me in the past that he has learnt things from these chats as my parents have been investing in shares for many decades using their own hunches and have seen many ups and downs in their values.

Well before advisers had to declare the commissions she would ask him his commission and in a lot of cases would negotiate with him on commission.

She visits him around three times a year for a chat and cup of tea.

She finds an IFA ideal for her as it gives her advice on her entire portfolio and updates on the market

For some people a IFA is a godsend, especially and old experienced IFA, for others they may not appreciate the service. A good way of finding one is ask friends or especially your parents for a recommendation

So you did ask a question, you just didn't want answers you didn't like.
I was going to expand my view, but I'll just use yours.

You know it might have saved a lot of fuss and bandwidth if the first response had been, "Name a profession of which the British public do NOT have a jaundiced view!"
42 years of experience in the insurance industry.
And nothing the industry tries do to us surprises me any more!

It sounds ideal and exactly how it should work.
I know there are some who do a rounded job very well.

There are also those (in every profession) who will concentrate on the money making aspects.

Firemen, nurses, teachers, dinner ladies, caretakers
