Thinking of going to Ullapool on holiday this year.
We've always wanted to see more of this beautiful country we live in and for some reason, Ullapool came up.
Anyone ever been? What is there to do. Would you recommend it?
Any thoughts or advice appreciated including local accomodation.

I've only ever travelled through it, mainly to catch the ferry to Stornoway. It seems a great wee place, no idea about accomodation, but something I always fancied doing which was to drive out of Ullapool and head north towards Sutherland, up the West Coast, I've heard the roads and views are amazing.
I think Poolewe is up that way too and has amazing gardens, there's also fishing boats, not sure if public can go on them for fishing trips or not.
There's a couple of hotels and plenty of B & B's as far as I'm aware.
I think also to the south heading towards Gareloch plenty to see and do.
Hope this helps, and if you're stuck you can always jump on the ferry to Lewis. Thanks to all the competition posters.0 -
Ullapool - passed through many times en-route to Stornoway on CalMac when working on Lewis.
Very nice round there. I only stayed there overnight once, when the ferry was cancelled due to a storm. Don't recall the hotel being memorable, but then I'm a bit fussy!
Nice place to eat: http://www.theseaforth.com/

I live north of Ullapool (just down from Cape Wrath) and can confirm what the others have said, great wee place and well worth a visit (though, in summer!)
The Seaforth Hotel is a great place to eat, and there are loads of BnB`s and rentals around. You can take daily ferry trips to the Summer Isles (Wicker Man anyone?
) from there too. In summer the place thrives and is chock full of tourists.
If you get the time to drive further north up the West Coast, you`ll enjoy some of the most stunning scenery in Scotland. The wildlife is fantastic also, with plenty red deer, birds of prey, seals, etc to watch."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"
