whats your best remedy for painful ears

My OH suffers terribly with painful ears when landing on a plane journey. We have a trip to Oz coming up and he's getting anxious already. He's tried the usual things like sucking sweets, putting his fingers in his ears, ear plugs, but nothing seems to help. Any favourite tried & trusted remedies?

I feel his pain
Best one for me is to hold your nose closed, then try and blow your fingers off, eventually you will hear your ears pop
But usually need to do it a few times/plane journeyMortgage Aug 12 £165K, Aug 19 £0

Keeping hydrated also helps so the drinks trolley is best avoided. Stick to water instead.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

One of my sons suffers terribly with this problem, but finds that taking a decongestant/painkiller combination an hour or so before the descent helps enormously.[0

my daughter suffers badly as well, we were told deaf people dont suffer(dont know if its true or not) so my daughter took her iphone played it loudly(with earphones in) & said it wasnt as bad as normal, altho we usually find the bigger the plane the less she suffers
all the best

Sinus stick - i.e vix just take a sniff to open your airways and flight ear plugs together works a treat0

Thanks folks. I'm going to try & persuade him to take some Night Nurse capsules. The decongestant & analgesic might help. Also it might help him sleep ( he wont normally take pills but might just agree to this) He cant sleep on a plane so he sits there getting anxious and then is surprised when he gets let lag that lasts for a week. Also, I'm going for the ear plugs too. I googled it and find that Boots do their own version of Ear Planes- about £4. Just wish Australia was a bit nearer.:smileyhea A SMILE COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING0

Earplanes. You can buy them at most chemists and they equalise the pressure inside the ears. An anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen an hour before landing should help as well.0
