How to progress in life?

Thanks for all the help guys it has been taken on board,i did mostly coding at Uni, as for the Entry level jobs i did spot 1 a year ago, i think it was called Microsoft Gold or something, they actually wanted me to pay for a course, and if i passed they would guarantee me a job!!!
It has to be said Slugger is absolutely correct, i have seen people who can barely speak English, become supervisors, yet people who work hard and are well spoken find it extremly hard.
I think i have just opened my eyes recently, and can see that there are many people who are in jobs, who i and others, can probarly do a better job, but because thy have a Degree or have connections, they are chosen ahead, regardless of their ability at the actual job, it aint fair, but i suppose life isnt fair.
And that is sadly the harsh reality of it all.0 -
you dont need experience for retail let aone a 12k retail job, i was on 12k (or not far off, it was 5 years ago so if i was gettings wage then yes it would be 12k) when i was last in retail,
OP im actually in a similar position to yourself except i have a btec instead of a hnd, everything you described in your first post is exactly how i feel at the minute,
I applied for the posistion, the feed back I got was that my application was not considered becasue I did not meet their requirement of min 2 years working in a simular role.
YES, FOR A MIN WAGE UNSKILLED ROLE.0 -
Yes, Russe11, I'm afraid that's not uncommon - at the moment employers can pick and choose

so will you work on getting a degree or building connections? Making yourself more visible to the right people for the right reasons can't do any harm professionally.
In some respects even though it might not seem fair networking/having connections is an important managerial skill to have. You have to be able to get people who dont work for you to do what you want them to do when you want them to do it.The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese :cool:0 -

Hello fedster
To continue the theme of 'getting yourself noticed', is there a committee you could join at work. For example, if your company has a safety committee...........you could volunteer to be a safety representative member from the warehouse. What you learn from attending the safety meetings will help you to make suggestions for safety improvements which can be implemented in your work place.
If IT is your interest, how about setting up a monthly site emagazine/newsletter? Printed copies could be posted on site noticeboards and you could volunteer to be the editor. You could invite colleagues to submit stories (hobbies, sport, charity events) and have a 'Focus on a job/person' article.
Offer to organise a works charity football/cricket tournament and ask the boss to provide a trophy................so that it becomes an annual event. The winning team get to chose which charity benefits from the money raised.
All of these things will get you noticed and help to raise your profile within your company.
Good luck

Above someone commented about HND being worthless and not being a employer I can't really comment on that, however I can say my HND has done nothing for me.
They are sold as a qualification, which therefore means once compleated you are classed as an "IT Professional" when more realisitcally they are a sstepping stone of learning to progress to a degree course, their is no requirement for most HND courses other than an interest in doing the course and paying the course fees. The learning and experience you gain in the subject is little more advanced than A Level learning. If I had realised this at the time then maybe I would not of even started it and looked at doing a proper degree in a pure subject.
It wasted a couple of years of my life I think in many ways, as after the course I had no desire to move on to a degree as IT was so boring its unreal. In that time if I had been working when doing this course i'd of gained work experience, income and likely a good reference.0
