You could of course plug your kettle into the second output (or third) of your diverter...

Anyone still running a Wattson could use their 'optiplug'.

  • I see that Sajid Javid is floating the idea of scrapping RPI and replacing it with CPI - to save money I guess. CPI is invariably lower than RPI.

Will he be able to get away with this ?

Feed-in Tariffs are linked to RPI and I thought I had a 25 year contract with the goverment which inlcuded the use of RPI.

They've talked about this before, and if they get rid of RPI altogether the increases will depend on the terms of the original agreement. I imagine provision was made for a replacement measure such as CPI to be used.

Conservative governments have past form on this - public sector pensions for example. My guess is they'll get away with it, but it will depend on the original agreements, and the outcome of any challenges.

As we are know FIT is paid for all PV generated electricity and the tables give rates for exported electricity.

Is/was there a contractual position on the 50% 'deemed' export? Or measuring the actual export?

I'm sure the roll out of smart meters is part of this, if they can prove you are not exporting 50% (and I'm not) they will probably be able to get out of paying 50%, or am I just being paranoid?

To go back on the question of solar friendly appliances FIRST don't try this at home!!!
Last year I got a condensing tumble dryer with smart sensing having got the circuit diagram the heating element is still just a resistive one so I now have it wired into my solar diverter, when I've heated the water I can switch over to powering the tumble dryer element (only the element) via the sensing circuit so it will happily run until the clothes are dry and then stop. Works well but catch 22 if there's sun why no just hang the stuff out?
Two more points, why can't we have (heat proof) LED lights in ovens, fridges and freezers?
Secondly, domestic ovens have timers with bleepers, why can't they be designed to bleep when the oven gets up to the desired temperature? my wife sometimes goes' back half an hour later to see if the oven is ready to use!!! Just a thought.

Mine bleeps, but only a single one, Ok if I'm actually in the kitchen. One of the cheaper Ikea models.

Here in the south a gorgeously sunny day. Full tank of hot water, dishwasher on and my new smart meter telling me I'm exporting. Looks like from the forecast tomorrow I could have a traditional laundry Monday!

Mine’s pretty consistent in that it takes 8.5 mins to get to 200c or less to get to, say 160, so I set the oven timer for whatever time to temp is being used and it’s usually within a second or 10 so that works well. But yes, an insistent beeper for temp would be far more use than a light that goes out. Why can’t you out LEDs in a fridge light fitting?

LED in a fridge/freezer might have a moisture issue. I guess for the time it's on they don't think it's worth the bother/expense, but every little helps, just think a fridge with the entire back wall illuminated, that would be (excuse the pun) cool! When there are no more filament bulbs left it might happen, but oven ones would be worth the effort to develop.
