I have a low wattage (800w) electric oven, which I can use if conditions are favourable instead of using the gas oven.

I'd guess a microwave combi oven grill would do the same. Anyone know the typical power levels of the over and grills?

Not sure about our new combi microwave/grill (I have a rough estimate that is uses about the same as a conventional oven but is much quicker and also a smaller volume. Our old 800W microwave actually consumed about 1600W. Still less than a conventional oven of course.

We now use an Air Fryer to do most of the cooking we used to do in the oven or under the grill.
It peaks at about 1.3kW, quite a bit lower than the 3kW elements in the oven/grill.
Therefore, if the sun is shinning, dinner can be cooked for free!
It also seems to be quicker, so uses less power for the same amount of cooking.

My 800w microwave uses about 1500w. I've spoken to a few people who think microwaves must be very efficient (e.g. the friend who insists that boiling a cup of water in the microwave is cheaper than using the kettle) when in fact they are not.

My four slot toaster uses around 2900w so I'd guess a grill is fairly similar.

The small of the ovens on my cooker is about 1600w.

I'm pretty sure our microwave works by turning the magnetron on & off to achieve different power levels. If yours works in the same way as mine, the 1500w magnetron is on about 53% of the time to achieve an average of 800w.

Life's too short. Panels have been in for 9 years, they've fully recouped the cost, but the amounts saved by messing around with low wattage ovens has never seemed worthwhile in the overall scheme of things

Not sure I agree with this. I use a halogen oven, which uses about half the power of my conventional oven and is far more convenient due to the faster heat up and cooking times. I also use a George Forman grill - again more convenient and quicker as well as using significantly less energy. I reckon I probably save an average of 1kWh per day by using this kind of appliance, which respresents about 25% of my non-heating electricity connsumption so if you look at it in those terms quite a worthwhile saving on top of the other benefits.

Every little helps, plus what you might describe as 'messing around' can be fun to some of us OCD'ers. ;)

And going forward, I suppose monitoring max power draw (and spreading out energy consumption) will help with battery deployment too.

I'm somewhere in the middle there.
I'm all for more efficient, and energy saving, but not less efficient and energy saving.

Mmmmikey two examples are better efficiency, cant argue with that.

I prefer to try and make my home system work with my life, not the other way around.

Thus is entirely my decision and nothing to do with the wife putting on what she wants, when she wants.... honest guv!

Batteries ramp up the OCD to an entirely new level....

I may need to book some CBT sessions when I eventually get an EV.:D
