Still being relatively new to this game of 'what's the system doing?'. I was surprised to get a solid 250W when fog visibility was down to about 30m, first thing this morning, about the worst I've seen for years. Then 450/500W when fog was 50m+.

Not complaining, just surprised. These panels do try their best. The little engines that can!

    Mart.

    Hello Mart

    Had inverters changed today.

Does anyone else get as annoyed with weather forecasts as I do ?

Yesterday, forecast was for thick cloud all morning with possibility of a little sun after lunch. What actually happened was brilliant sunshine first thing with perhaps 10% cloud cover developing late afternoon.

When I went to bed last night, forecasts (I monitor local forecasts from both Met office & BBC ) agreed that we'd have thick cloud all day today. Looking out of window, it seems much like yesterday (perhaps a tad more cloud but energy yield is more than half what it was this time yesterday). Just checked forecasts to find they've changed their minds and are now 'predicting' some sunshine for this morning.

Pretty well convinced that 'forecasters' are a waste of space.

Another foggy morning in cider country today. Despite no discernable sun amongst the fog, our panels are still kicking out 450W at the moment. This is considerably more than they would on a typical overcast day. Yesterday it took until lunchtime for the fog/mist to burn off completely, by which time our best generation hours had passed :-(

We still managed 8.9kWh though, which is above PVGIS daily estimate for March.

February total figures ended up at 195kWh here: 22% ahead of PVGIS estimate, or 18% if the PVGIS target is increased by 29/28 to take account of the leap day.

I think you're overlooking the fact that it's a forecast - not a 100% accurate statement of what's going to happen. Things change - that's the way weather works.

The Met Office has an extremely good record, borne out by fact. It's not 100%, but how could it be?

I take them with a pinch of salt. Fortunately I WFH so can put appliances on when the sun makes an appearance. Remember that forecasts are something like 90% computer modelling and 10% human input. For specific postcode forecasts the human element of the forecast is probably even less significant, or zero.

It has been wobblier than usual over the last couple of weeks, it seems to me. However...

I find it much better to look at the moving charts on the BBC than to read the summary. You can then often see that there are streaks of dense cloud, and your position relative to these moving features is critical. A small change in direction and everything changes.

We had a good example last year: the sister in law lives about 8 miles from us. She phoned one evening to say what a wonderful day they'd had cycling round the villages in the sun - we'd had black clouds and rain all day. How is a weather forecast ever going to communicate that?

On a bad day, we just set the various timers for 10:30 to 12:30 (which is our peak generation time as we will may at least get some small contribution), washing m/c first, as that heats early in the cycle and then the wishdasher 30 minutes later as that heats more than once so is less predictable.

More than that, you've just got to forget it and chill out!

I prefer to use it as an excuse to take a break from the laptop (since I don't drink tea or coffee I need another reason). I certainly don't stress about it ;) But we do hold off doing a load of washing until a good day if we can. The dishwasher generally can't wait though.

Isn't the saving outweighed by the extra cost of deodorant? :rotfl:

LOL, the laundry basket doesn't hum no. If there's sports kit though we don't hang about putting it on!
