Physically you can, if the roof is large enough; you would almost certainly need a bigger inverter, but your FiT provider and the operator of the local net work might spot the anomaly; expect hassle at some point even if by using a high percentage yourself, with clever monitoring kit, you were not at risk of de-stabilising your local bit of the grid.
"The regulations are the regulations we cannot have every Tom !!!!!! and Harry churning out local electricity."

The thought has occurred to me, as I don't face due south, could I put up 20 instead of 18 panels.
In theory I even have an inverter designed for California that is capable of throwing ways excess power if needed.

The panels these days, especially Chinese ones, are getting very cheap.

Mind you that said, I remember having a similar discussion years ago about a starter level mini computer/word processor - in the days "before PC" when there was still a central processing unit and some terminals.

Though there were three levels and three prices. In reality everyone got the expensive version but it was down graded for those skinflint installations, until such time as they paid for "an upgrade".
The upgrade simply involved putting a few new connector wires inside the cabinet.

John. I've heard the argument repeatedly that if the inverter restricts output to 3.68kW for G83 compliance then for example after installing 5kWp across E&W (or even, all on one aspect) then when declaring the system you could put total installed capacity (TIC) 5kW, but declared net capacity (DNC) as 3.68kW.

Not sure if anyone has tried this. Not sure if it's really within the spirit of FITs, since the scheme is very generous already.

Only my personal view, but I'd be worried not just about winning the argument on day one, but any future reviews, and winning the argument for the next 25 years. Would it be worth the risk of having the system rating changed to 4 to 10 in y3 or so?

Macman, hope I'm not misleading anyone, but I understand that if there is only one TGM, the generation would be proportionalised, and paid according to both applicable date rates, and size rates.

  • Gutted - didnt break 10kwh for the day :(

total is 9.93 kwh for the day , 2kw system (10 x sovello 200w panels) SMA 1700 invertor , 140 degrees south east

I was playing the same game, and lost. 9.7kWh's. If it's any consolation from a 3.6kWp system. Rats.

Do I even dare to guess what the 'Essex Possie' have generated?

Still not jealous, no siree, not jealous one little bit. Perfectly content. ;)

1st sunny day here (Surrey) since I got my system, and I now realise I've got major problems. What a killer shading is! Panels (1.75kW) face SW. Generation built up nicely to 1.1kW at about 11am when is started getting shading from trees. It just plopped down to 100-200W most of the rest of the day - there are about 4 trees (two evergreens, the rest not even any leaves yet!) which go from S to SW. They're massive - owned by council/road people. Maybe in a few weeks the sun may be above a couple, but the other two are closer and I doubt it'll ever clear them. The shadows aren't hard or distinct. The near one, the worst, a now enormous beech) is one I planted after the 87 storm - thought so many trees gone I should replant one. We're in a country lane with houses just one side - the other side is just about 40 feet of trees (publicly owned) then a road then a private golf course.

So - how do I get rid of a massive tree or two? I'm ok with a chainsaw, but I know my limits, and these are beyond them. Any council workers here? If I asked the council/road authorities or whoever owns them, are they likely to prune it (heavily) if I ask them? Or slap a protection order on them? I only want to save the planet afterall.
