Benefits Question: Eligibility?

Hi everyone,
I've got a couple of questions regarding benefits:
1) is it possible to claim benefits for a period in the past if you were entitled? If so, how far back can you go?
2) during a 3 and a half year period, my partner and I were living together, while one of us was a student (working part time) and one of us was working.
Income consisted of the following (all per annum):
£12,000 FT salary before tax
£5,000 PT salary before tax
£10,000 student stipend (tax free).
Should the student stipend be taken into account when calculating eligibility for benefits?
Do you think we should have been eligible for any benefits during this time?
Best wishes,
Freddy.

By student stipend do you mean loans/grants/bursarys?
If so then yes, student loans & grants are classed as income for income based benefits. Some student grants such as the Parent Learning Grant are not counted as income for benefits purposes.http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/On_a_low_income/DG_070816
Unless you had children/disabilities I don't think you'd have been entitled for benefits for this period. £27,000 annual income is hardly a low income. What benefits do you think you should've been entitled to?

As for backdating benefits, there are different rules depending on the benefit. Have a look at the link below for info on different benefits

Some of the student loan and grants are disregarded for benefits.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

there's usually a 3 month rule for backdating benefit claims. You can't backdate on the grounds that you didn't know you were entitled to benefits. OP you've got no chance at all.0

Ok, no problem.
I suspected not, but someone suggested we look into it - as they thought that the stipend would not be counted.
Cheers to everyone who posted a response
