Has anyone any idea why CHKDSK runs every time my computer is switched on or restarted?
It's driving me nuts!
I've just spent the last 24 hours uninstalling almost everything that wasn't strictly needed, scanning with Norton + Spybot, updating from Windows site, optimising/defragging etc. Nothing seems to find anything untoward although the Norton disk check does throw up an opening screen to say that it can't scan disk 2. (I don't have a disk 2???)
Everything seems to work ok though and there's nothing in the system scheduled tasks listed.
Be grateful for any ideas.

I had something similar to this.
When I told windows to shutdown the pc would shutdown to a blank screen but the 'You may now switch off message' (or whatever it said) did not appear. I would physically switch off the PC but when I next switched on the PC CHKDSK would always run. As you say - very annoying.
The only way I found to stop it was to select 'Restart' rather than 'Shut down' on the shutdown multi-choice screen, wait until the blank screen appeared and the hard disc light stopped flickering but before the restarted Windows screen appeared and physically switch off at that point. Only then would Windows start normally next time I switched on.0 -
You don't have a card reader do you? If you have and there's a card in there then that would be the second disk, whenever i leave my SD card in the laptop it tries scanning it on boot up0

Computer shuts down fine, very occasionally get a box that says 'program something or other is not responding' and I have to click the 'end now' button. But that is only once in a while.
No card reader on pc but printer has a built in one. Same printer for ages though and never had problem before - haven't left cards in either. Might uninstall/reinstall printer just to see though.
Thanks for replies so far.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Hi Steeev
It's XP ProHerman - MP for all!0 -
do you let it complete its scan or do you cancel it to allow it to complete booting up?
if you cancel the scan, then it will keep trying to run chkdsk every time you power up/reboot until it completes successfully
best bet is to let it run throughsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

Hi robnye,
No I let it go every time. in fact these days I usually just switch the computer on and go head for the kettle. By the time I've made tea, it's normally finished it's routine. ::)Herman - MP for all!0 -

Thanks for info Beninio88. I've had a quick look and I'm not sure if it applies or not. I'll have to spend time reading it properly later.
(As soon as I saw the reference to changing registry settings I went cold all over. Lol!)Herman - MP for all!0 -
