Didn't pay postage?

Hi all, cant find a board relating to this so I'm going for local knowledge.

Today I posted a letter to the DVLA and didn't put the stamp on the letter(I know, I know). What do the Post Office do with such letters?

I was thinking of waiting for the postman to collect on Tuesday and asking him if I can add the stamp then! Any ideas peeps?

TIA Paul.

Mods please move if need be.

Don't waste your time, they won't (and I think it is illegal for the postie to do so iirc) :o

Was there anything in the letter other than the envelope? You could just send another copy.

Royal Mail will deliver it but it would be up to the DVLA to pay the postage. If they choose not to do this then your letter wouldn't be delivered.

If there's loads of mail in the postbox the postie is unlikely to stand there whilst you look for your letter!

they are not allowed to give you access to the mail from collections
they item will be charged and if the recipient pays for it or they have an account
it will be delivered, however it will be delayed by going through revenue protection.
some companies point blank refuse to pay for charges.rightly so TBH
We had a group of large gov tax offices in my old office
the amount of underpaid stuff the got and paid was unbelievable

Thanks guys, a logbook for a car I've just sold is in the envelope.

What will happen to the letter if DVLA refuse to pay, ie whats my next move?

    you don't really have one
if it has a return address then it will come back to you (maybe a month or more) and be charged
if not.it goes to Belfast to be opened and a way of returning it being found.
why not phone the DVLA and ask them their protocol on charges?

OK, I've been to our sorting office and they say it'll be delivered to the DVLA and I should contact them. So as you say Custardy, I rang the DVLA and they say they'll pick up the cost of the postage! I was told to ring back if I've not heard anything in about 2-3 weeks!

  • Hi again guys, just to update; today I had a reply from the DVLA about my old car, so they have received the letter and paid the postage. I hope I learn from my mistakes eh!.
