The LCD is backlit by tubes behind the display, the LED is an LCD that is backlit by LED'S, there are two types of LED, one is edge lit and the other has a full array of LED'S behind the display. So LCD and LED are in fact both LCD'S but with different methods of back lighting.
  • And to be fair there is not a lot of difference in quality, though the "LED" is a little more expensive to run!

Err .. I thought led was more efficient than fluorescent backlighting.
  • It isn't just the actual running cost per se but the replacement costs of the LED backlights, which although the technology is still relatively new, have quite a short life

Err . . I thought leds had many times the life of a fluorescent

LED lighting can last upwards of 60,000 hours before needing to be replaced. Fluorescent lighting, particularly CFL bulbs, can last around 10,000 hours before needing to be replaced. You would have to replace the average CFL bulb 6 times to equal the lifespan of one LED light bulb

Behave yourself - LED backlighting urinates all over fluorescent backlighting all day long.
