Hi sorry if in wrong place please move to correct board if it is!!
ok well i am 39+ weeks and i am due to have baby on 4th november been to midwife today and she said if the baby hasnt arrived by next wednesday then she is coming round to do a membrane sweep  obviously i know this is in the best interest for the baby but i really do not want this doing because A) I have a 2year old and nobody to look after him and this isnt right doing this when he is there and refuse to lock him in his room etc etc and
When i has 1st child btw this is second! had to be induced because he had problems at 37 weeks had the gel they use and that caused nothing but trouble got all the bad side effects from it so really dont want to have that either will they think i am being fussy if i refuse the membrane sweep and the gel???
thanks for any advice in advance!

If money doesn't grow on trees then why do banks have branches?:D
Can you breathe out of your nose and mouth at the same time?
Why don't the hairs on your arms get split ends?

I had this second time around, and DS2 stayed put!
If you are not happy to have this ,I would tell the midwife this and explain your reasons . Dont worry about what they might think of you etc etc , it is in their best interest to have a happy mum to be . BTW this was not offered to me until I was 41+ weeks. Good luck0 -
thanks for your quick reply! would hit the thanks button but its not there
i will be 4 days over if it still hasnt arrived so hopefully it will by then! btw does this hurt when they are doing it as thinking back i was actually just induced with the gel and this is what caused the pains and wondering do u get bad pains from the sweep afterwards??
thanks

I had a sweep with my first, didn't hurt a bit. If you're not happy with having it done, please mention it, it's your body at the end of the day so don't have it done if you are uncomfortable with it!
P.S. good luck with the birth!:):)

I had a sweep while in labour with both of mine to help things along.... my second i had a 2 hour labour.
Dont be afraid to refuse if you dont want it but it helped in my case (but was already in labour!)
Good luck - might pop out early with a bit of luck

You do not have to have anything done that you are not happy with.0

I had a sweep with both of my pregnancys and it started me off both times.
I agree with shellsuit if you dont want it dont have it!
Your lucky to get it offered I had to ask both times for a sweep! and then it didn't work straight away!
GOOD LUCK!

I had a sweep with my 3rd - but was already in labour. Didn't really speed things up tho. My niece had 3 or 4 sweeps, none worked. If baby not ready/not already in labour, I'm not convinced that it helps
Not had the gel, but as far as I know, they do this to induce labour after the sweep fails and before using a drip, but don't quote me on that.
Good luck with baby0 -
I had a gel induction with my first and a membrane sweep with my second (I didn't actually know what it was at the time, it is only years later that I found out it had a proper name) and I know which I would prefer. I too had the pains with the gel. The sweep was quick and virtually painless and it certainly got labour going. I gave birth four hours later.0

You dont have to have any induction at all if you dont want, it is only a reccomendation, it is up to you what you want.
You dont have to have the pessery gel if you dont want, I had it with my first and it burned like hell. If you are already dialated by 2cm, you can ask for the oxytocin drip, which trust me, hurts like hell, but it does get labour moving on fast, and I never had a problem with it other than not being able to move around.
Once you get to the stage when you are ready to give birth you can try to induce it yourself, you can try certain rocking exercises where it tries to engage babies head forcing it down a bit, then there is nipple tweeking, you do need to do this often, and for a while, but it simulates breastfeeding which causes uterine contractions and can be quite effective. Just relaxing can set you off because your body knows it is a good time.
Good luck.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0
