How much does it cost to have a key meter taken out?

I'm moving to a house that has a gas key meter (british gas), but would like to stay on my E.ON online tariff by direct debit.

Does anyone know if it costs to have these things taken out?

    British Gas will take it out for free and then you can change back to Eon.

    Hi fuzzgun19,

    As you are a house move customer and currently have a credit meter and pay by Direct Debit with E.ON, we would change the meter for free for you. (We would need to make sure your account had not had any missed payments or outstanding balances).

    I see the new house is supplied by British Gas, so once you have taken responsibility of the property you can start the change of supply process. Just contact E.ON to do this for you.

    You must also make it clear when contacting E.ON that you want to take your tariff with you, this can then be set up on your new account.

    Just for the benefit of others, a non essential meter exchange would normally cost £50.

    If you need any more info, just ask.

  • this is exactly my situation...I moved to a BG prepayment metered house, got changed back to Eon, and (thanks to some help from Helena - thank you xxx) today I got my shiny new credit meters installed.....its so exciting!!


    whole thing has taken about 6-7 weeks in all....now just got to wait for my new meters to be logged, and I can select my online tariff....I can feel some sums coming on!!!!

    I found it quicker to do it the other way around. I got BG to change the gas meter within a week and then thought about changing tariffs. But then I couldn't stand the prepayment business and just wanted shot as quickly as possible.

    They did mess up the electric meter account but that's a whole 'nother story.

    BG won't usually change a meter within a week - it's normally about 2-3 at best.

    BG won't usually change a meter for a new occupier straight away unless that occupier has recently held a BG account elsewhere - they typically wait about 3 months.

    BG will credit check the applicant (unless they already held a BG account recently in which case they'll use the credit data they already hold)

    I work for British Gas in that department, and can confirm that that isn't the policy.
    If you move into a house with a PP meter, and you either pay a deposit or pass the credit check you can get the meter changed within a week (so long as the snow doesn't come back)

    Quick question if I may.

    The key meters in the new house are in a cupboard under the stairs.

    When E.ON take out the meters, would it be possible for them to move the credit meters to another area of the house? ... (My present electric one is on the wall near the front door).

    Would this be possible, or would you charge for this to be done.. or would the credit meters just have to be under the stairs again?

    Hi fuzz,

    A meter move would normally be chargeable, it would be the meter operator that would need to quote for this work.

    When you contact E.ON regarding the appointment ask them about this, the cost will depend on how far the meters are moved, how much work involved etc.

    I must say, I have known this to be quite costly.
