Laptop - screen flickers after start up

My mum has a Dell laptop and after being started, the screen has begun to flicker quite violently several times between the desktop display and a black screen whilst it is being started up. What would cause this?!?

Common symptons of EITHER a faulty INVERTER BOARD or BACKLIGHT , prepare for a full screen blackout , on a lighter note it may be a loose connection

experienced this myself on my acer
, i repalced the inverter , but to no avail, backlight just not viable to replace
Although its a great excuse to get a new laptop
