Hi guys,
I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas that may help me as im totally useless at finding the cheapest way to do stuff.
I have been told today that I have to get to Grantham early on 4th January. (Travelling from Gloucester) I have checked prices myself and a one way (whcih is all i need for now) is $60 + (in effect making is cheaper for me to drive)
I dont really want to drive as its a 3hr trip by myself, so was wondering if anyone could offer me some tips?
Thanks very much in advance!

Split at Nottingham.
Gloucester to Nottingham by Cross country, after 9am = £17.50 (advance ticket, buy it now online using any train operator website).
Nottingham to Grantham = £7 (no need to buy in advance).0 -
Can be done for £21.50, but the earliest you get to Grantham is 13:56.
Gloucester to Birmingham New Street = £9.00 Advance Single.
Birmingham New Street to Peterborough = £7.50 Advance Single.
Peterborough to Grantham = £5.00 Advance Single.0 -

If you book these tickets, you are commited to those trains ONLY, no changes, no flexibility, great prices but just be sure they fit exactly to your plans.0 -
I would also suggest:
- Allowing plenty of time at the station where you change from one train to the next;
- Booking all the tickets in one transaction on one website.
Some guards claim that you take "a risk" by splitting the journey into a combination of multiple tickets in that if you are delayed you can be denied onward travel on additional tickets. If you allow plenty of time (more than the minimum) and bring the relevant documentation then they are unlikely to persue it. I did once help someone who had this problem with East Coast, and EC cancelled the UPFN (Unpaid Fare Notice - never pay up straight away or it'd be harder to get it back).Advance_Conditions wrote:b) If delays occur while

their journey.
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/system/galleries/download/misc/NRCOC.pdf19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:
(a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit their use);
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one ticket to another; or
(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include
Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport
executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not.
My standard advice can be found here.0 -
You may have a problem collecting the ticket - Gloucester ticket office has been damaged in an arson attack and I don't know what facilities are still usable. You may need to go to Cheltenham to collect your ticket.

And if you are coming back sometime but don't know when an off peak return - valid one month - is actually cheaper than your original single fare, and gives you flexibility0
