I use an old Vodafone 1GB sim which doesn't expire, I try to use wifi when possible (at home, friends, cafe & BT Fon) so hardly use the 3G so the 1GB has lasted 5 months so far and still has over half the credit left.

My friend has a wifi only iPad and she says she'd never needed 3G and if she started to find she does she'd link it to her phone.

Unless you know you're going to be using it a lot out and about then I wouldn't get one via the like of Orange on a 24 month contract, it works out very expensive, be out of date within a couple of months of having (if got now) and I can exchange cheap sims from any network to have the best coverage / cheapest deal.

It depends where you are -- in London my iPad zips along on 3G, out where I live (East Sussex) then there is hardly any reception (on O2) and it drops back to Edge or GPRS and that is very, very slow.

Hi Steve, I'm in East Sussex, bought an i-phone 4 on O2 and couldn't get any signal within a couple of miles radius of home, took it back and changed it for a T-mobile one and get a great 3G signal throughout the area.
Apparently 02 don't have a 3G network around the Hastings & Rother area of the county but T-mobiles is excellant.
