    Read this: http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/performance/performance_dec_2010.pdf

They both are rated 3 stars, with Avast scoring ever so slightly more in the detailed results.

But Avira has far superior detection rates, although it can be a bit trigger happy IMO. Avast detection rates are quite a bit lower than many other AV's including Avira. For that reason I wouldn't use it.

I recently switched from Avira to Avast because the auto-update didn't work and they appear to have no interest in fixing it. Essentially, Avira is attempting to access the Internet when the machine boots, but fails because a connection has not been established at that time. It then doesn't seem to automatically check again for at least 24 hours, so unless I left the machine on all the time...so Avast, it seems better than I remember it last time, but I may well give Comodo another look.

Ome issue I've found with Avast is that web broswing becomes noticably slower. I've ended up turning off most of its 'Shields' as only the real-time file system one seems necessary to me.

They both seem to have equal support on this forum -why don't you just try each yourself and see what they use resource-wise on your pc ?

I have avast with vista and I am really happy with it.

some may remember a couple of my posts a few months ago...when I tried avira, avast (which I like) and MSE, the ping times were the decider for me. Never liked MSE, and ping times were bad. Avast was slightly slower ping than avira, and my desktop has avira on it now. Still use avast on the kid's lappys, where ping isn't quite so important, but retaining the e-mail scanner :)
