Wheres best and cheapest to buy seeds

Discussing plans for garden veg oatch with hubby this year we want to grow things

that grow sucessfully as had some failures.
stuff we both like.

Hubby says we need to plant feb just wnat to get seeds at best price.:D

Moles Seeds do big packs which work out very cheap, most seeds can be stored for 3 - 5 years (except parsnips).

Feb is much to early to sow seeds outside

Cheap seeds at the likes of Lidl, Poundland etc, however choice of variety is limited, so if looking for something unusual or a bit exotic you amy be unlucky

Make memo to self " I will plan ahead and buy reduced seeds from many garden centres / Wilkinson / B & Q etc in October 2011, and follow this forum for updates on seed reductions"

i personally have found ebay for me the cheapest place to buy seeds

Wilko's have great variety of seeds, and last year some were in 3 for £1.50 or 3 for £2.50, including peas and beans.

Ebay has one or two sellers who charge you one p&p cost and all items after that don't have extra p&p added, so that works out very cheaply.

A couple of the online companies do free p&p for seed orders.

B&Q has their own seeds pretty reasonably priced, but don't wait for any great offers, the only offer ours had this year was 4 for the price of 3.

I got some seeds from Garden by mail they do a 20p seed section and postage was only 50p

I don't know if they are any good yet as I got them for 2011 sowing.

Alan romans are good at about 50p a packet, lidl and aldi usually do a load of them around feb time for 29p-49p price

Thanks guys remember lidls did seed was wondering maybe wilkos.

Havent decided what to grow.
hubby keen gardener but tends to grow wrong things.

was inspired by bbc series edible garden hoping tp plant stuff even veg that grows in winter so got veg all year round so need some careful planning.

was wondering on getting one of those plastic wendy/green houses.
hubby suggested we put drinks bottles over top to protect from elements.
I was thinking feb bit early as still cold.

Is there anywher that has link what stuff needs planting when and what month it harvests so I can better plan seed purachases.

will try ebay.

not really growing much unusual stuff.
dissapointed with pumkins last year so thinking maybe butterbut squash this year maybe.

'Best and cheapest' don't necessarily go together, but anyway, I like to grow stuff from people who are growing in similar conditions to me, so I buy from Real Seeds. They also show you how to take seeds from your own plants, which will mean that future seasons' seeds will be free, though it's not quite as simple as that sounds!

I can recommed 'Blue Banana;' it certainly was prolific!

I also like Franchi seeds. One can often pick these up in garden centres nowadays, and their content is pretty generous compared with British companies.

What I would recomend in our experience is
1) Definately look at the seeds in Lidl/Aldi/Netto and the pound type stores, I know soime people are sceptical about cheap seeds, but we have found them to have great germination rates, in some cases much better than expensive brands.
2) The above stores whilst good will only have a limited range and if you want more specialised veg or a specific variety next stop for me would be the ebay shop I have used before or the garden direct site.
3) Then there is alan romans and real seeds both good, interesting varieties, but a bit more pricey. Or in the real world local nurseries.
4) Finally there are places like suttons seeds,thompsons etc and your local garden centres-but even here watch out for offers, especially on the big websites for free delivery or items on offer or even free with other items.

I guess like MSE be savvy and get what you need at the best price.

The final option is decide what you want to grow in 2012, then wait until Oct / Nov 2011 and go along to likes of Wilkinson's, B & Q etc as they are clearing out ready for Christmas 2011:mad: and buy choice or unusual varieties for about 25p or less per pack that were £2 plus

All, except parsley, will be viable for 2012
