EON Bill

I moved house in August and the property was with Utility warehouse. I switched to EOn because I have always been with them. I am due my quarterly bill from them and went online to submit meter readings to them, I worked out from the tariff that I am on, that I will owe about 120 pounds. I thought this was very good because I have downsized to a two bedroom house, the house is empty for around 10 hours a day and then another 7 hours of the day I am asleep. I dont use a lot of appliances, I probably use the washing machine 3 times a week, a small dishwasher twice tops and probably the tumble drier once. The tv is only on for about an hour a day. i use far less than I did in my last property which was on eon card and key and cost me around 140 a month, I thought this property would be far less, especially as my ex partner used to be at home all day with heating and the computer on.

Anyway, I submitted my meter reading and it says I owe 396 pounds - how is this possible???

I worked out from my tariff that I have used 861 units 125 at the higher rate (approx 25 pounds) and the rest at the lower rate which comes to (approx 77 pounds) then there were 177 units on my gas (14 pounds approx) so where do they get this huge figure from. I have budgeted 60 a month for gas and electric and can not believe that a smaller house that I spend less time in would cost as much as card and key meters in a 3 bed house where stuff was being used all the time! Grrrrrr rant over! Any advice would be great thanks

When you moved to the house in August did you give actual meter readings? Was your previous bill estimated or actual meter readings? Do you pay by DD ?
If your last bill was in late September/early October - guessing it was as you said your current quarter is now due- and it was accurate and based on actual meter readings, I would say that £396 is quite high from the usage youve mentioned. It does sound a lot, especially if you've been making monthly DD payments. Does the bill actually say your account is in debit by that much?
Can you give us the date of the previous bill and the actual meter readings from that period, and then supply your current meter readings.

Someone from EOn came round and took readings, I havent yet set up direct debits I was waiting for the first bill. Would it be that they have possibly estimated and that is why it is so huge and it will adjust from my readings?

Edited as I think I'm getting confused....
Do you mean that eon read the meters when you first moved into the house? Have you had a bill since then? Or is this your first bill? And now you've sent in a meter reading? And got a bill of £396? Is this correct? If the bill is to cover 5 months (August to January) then £396 is probably reasonable considering how cold it's been lately.

If your meters have been read recently, and the meter reader didn't make a mistake, then it's likely that the original readings weren't right when you first moved in.

When did they read the meter? It should say on the online bill 'Actual meter reading' or 'meter read by us on' and the date.
And who read the meters when you first moved in? I think this is the key to this...

Can you check what the readings are on the bill and check what the meters actually show right this minute, just in case the meter reader made an error. If there's a big discrepancy then I suppose that's a possibility.

When I moved in the bills were with utility warehouse and I was given a swap over date with Eon which was October. I paid my final bill to utility warehouse and eon came and read the meters which show on my online account, so the bill is just for the past 3 months! I am just hoping they have estimated and it will be updated with my reading

Right, got you now! My head's not as clear as it should be ...cant think why..oh yeah it was New Years Eve last night!

So when you first sent the meter readings through to eon did they then email you back a bit later saying 'your eon bill is ready to view' ? And that's where it shows the £396 ? If that's the case then that's an actual bill based on your readings you sent them...what you need to do is double check the meters to make sure you put in the right figures (its easy to get it wrong), and then post here the usage amounts detailed on the actual online bill they've sent you.

Sorry, its probably me too...I did have too much to drink last night! They took the readings and I set up an online account. I have received an email to say I need to submit meter readings which I did. I then went to view bill and it said one was not available so I went to 'pay' and that is where is said I am in debit by 396 pounds! Had a mild heart attack I must admit!

Thanks for your advice - and happy new year!

Happy New Year to you too.

It does sound a lot for the usage you've detailed and the size of house. I'm with eon and my bill for the 30 September to 29 December, based on my actual readings was a bit less than £270. I am self employed, I work from home most days so I'm using my gas and electricity from 7am till bedtime.
I think you may be on a high rate, you need to look at getting on the best rate for you and that will probably mean you have to pay by DD too.

I am happy to pay bu direct debit, I do for everything else, but wanted to wait for the first bill so I could set it up. I am at work 5 days a week so no one is at home for most of the day. I dont have a huge amount of appliances that I use and dont leave things on unnecessarily so around 40-50 a month wouldnt have surprised me, 140 seems a bit much! Just found an old statement from my last property and I think the rates were 12p a kwh, the one I have been put on is 19.7p for the first 500 kwh a year and 10.5p after that. Do they split that 500kwh over the year or on the first 500 used??

    Hi smp77

It's important to make sure the meter readings we've opened your account to are the same as those used by Utility Warehouse to close your account with them. This will ensure you only pay once for the energy used.

If you entered readings through our website in response to an email from us, I suspect the bill is now available to view online.

Following the submission of readings, it usually takes approx 24 hours before bills can be viewed. The balance, though, is immediately available through our new real time billing process.

If the opening and latest readings are correct, this will represent the amount of energy used since we began supplying the property.

You mention a first tier (primary) threshold of 500 kWh per year. This sounds like one of our Track and Save products. There are cheaper tariffs available for managing your account online and paying with a Monthly Direct Debit.

For a much fuller picture, I would pop your details on to one of the comparison sites. This will list out all the options available to you, both with us and the other suppliers.

I can also confirm, the first 500 kWh are spread out over a full 12 months.

Hope this is of some use smp77. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help. Drop an email to the address in my Profile if you would like me to take a look at your account.
