Why not use an Ethernet cable, lot cheaper about £3 and very little if any setting up?

We have an ethernet cable but we have the problem that there's no way of connecting it to where the network comes in as there's no space for the pc anywhere near it. I was hoping we could when I realised the problem last night but the logistics are just too bad :(

I would seriously look at the possibility of laying an ethernet patch cable of the correct length round the sides of the room between the router and the PC. This avoids any problems with wireless connectivity, and may well be cheaper (provided you don't buy the cable from PC World, or suchlike...). You can find cable lengths like 5 m, 8 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m or 30 m from all sorts of places, such as Broadband Buyer, eBuyer, Play, etc. at probably well less than £10. And (with difficulty) you can get them in pink!

That's probably worth a serious think, if we moved our furniture round lwe wouldn't need too much cable (just googled it and found a pinky/red one for £3 - Lol - if only my partner would go for that colour!) Thanks for your help.

It's in the room but the pc is the other side of it (approx 20ft) there's no room next to it (at all!!)

My link was for a 20m cable.

my thoughts were if the router was in another room to the pc then you might get slow speeds but that theory was put to bed as you mentioned about your laptop being able to connect,

yes wireless dongle should be fine or go for the wired option,
  • Thanks everyone for all your advice. Much clearer now on what's needed, now just have to find best price, which option we can and wait for the postman to start delivering again on Tuesday!

Depending on your location, an electrical retailer such as Toolstation or tlc can come close to the Amazon price, and you'll not have to wait for delivery.

Avoid the likes of PCW or Comet.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Hi everyone, don't know if you're interested :rotfl:but i thought I'd update the thread with the ending to the story!

I ordered an Edimax wireless usb adaptor from Amazon:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Edimax-EW-7711UAN-150mbs-Wireless-Adapter/dp/B001KOTDDU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294500985&sr=8-1

Which cost me £9.99, free delivery (chepest I saw by far for the particular one, which after researching seemed to be the best. It arrived this morning, plugged it into the usb socket and It was up and running in seconds! Absolutely fantastic, didn't need to install anything or search for it. Im very impressed.

Thanks for all your help guys. It was much appreciated

    Thanks

Glad you have solved the problem - I got one of those Edimax adapters in April. However it doesn't seem to cope well with low signal strengths, which of course doesn't apply in your case in one room.
And you still have the pink ethernet patch cable to fall back on!
