Help with electricity bill raise

Dont know if anyone can help me!!!!! I dont know much about gas and electricity, and my bf even less.
My BF just got a letter through post 2day from British Gas saying that his monthly payments are going up from £15 a month to £51! (he pays a set amount each month with a card that he pays in post office, sorry dont know what it called!) because we are using more electricity than we used too - I dont see how??
Can anyone tell me if this seems a lot - know this isnt v good question, cos can vary, but for 2 people, who never leave lights on, TV on stand by etc, and dont seem to be doing anything different to normal?

Also can anyone recommened anyone cheaper??

Any help gratefull recieved :)

£15 a month on electricity for 2 people is very low. I'm very careful with electricity & don't use it unecessarily & my last bill was just under £80. That works out about £26.50 month.

I don't think you have to accept the monthly amount BG want you to start paying, you could suggest to them that you would prefer to pay say £30 month to see how that goes over the next quarter & if it still shows you need to increase it more then you will do so.

I believe BG are supposed to be one of the cheapest suppliers of electricity, so check out a couple of the comparrision sites before you think about changing suppliers.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

The £15 a month was probably too low, and the real amount, say £30. Add in the recent price rises, say to £35 and then the £50 is to bring the account back into line :)

Yup, if there is an outstanding balance now on the account not only will they increase your payments to match it they will law back the debt on top. If you call em up they will usually cut the payment by up to 10%, but at the end of the day unfortunately you have to pay for what you've used.
  • thanks for all ur help guys, makes more sense now :)

    We're using £15 a month and there's 3 of us. Just changed from british gas to ebico, using about 5 units a day @ 10p a unit = 50p a day = £15 a month.
