No water supply at work!

Hi people.

OH has got to work tonight to find that they have turned the water supply off at the mains outside so they have no water supply at all, no toilets or washing facilities.

Now we know the plumbers are not due back until the 4th January and the site is manned 24hrs a day my OH is on a 12hr shift. Having looked into it he can refuse to work under these conditions (i must point out they are in the middle of nowhere so cant really just pop out to the local pub to use the loo).

What we want to know is if he does come home ( as they have no intention of doing anything about the water) do they still have to pay him or can they refuse?

TIA

I would have thought they would have to pay him as they are not living up to their part of the contract, however has he tried to resolve the situation with his bosses first?

  • EHO would close the premises if there is no water, I believe it is illegal to operate under those circumstances.

It certainly is. I'm assuming he does security work? There has to be clean running water, a kettle and a working toilet & sink.

He should phone his manager and explain that there is no water there and he should not be working.

He did all the above and nothing was done they then suggested he went outside to the main water stop !!!! and try to turn it back on with a stick, bearing in mind this is the main water stop !!!! in the street not the one to the building and that it was the water board plumbers who switched it of. he came home in the end as they werent going to do anything. If they could have gotten the toilet working he would have stayed as i would have run some bottled water to them for him to use for drinking and washing purposes. It will be interesting to see if they have done anything when he gets there tonight.

Oh and yes he is a security guard :-)

    Thanks all :-)

I think what you would have done would have been more than fair, they need to get the toilet working and then as you say bottled water is more than adequate for the other things.

Why don't they hire a portaloo in the meantime?

That would have been the sensible thing for the supervisor to do when he was there during the day as control had left it in his hands to sort out the burst pipe. In all fairness he did sort the burst pipe by getting the water board out but he should have then put things in place until they could come back on tuesday but no as he is not going to be there whilst the water is off he doesnt give a stuff.

From one of the many portable loo hire companies that offer 24-hour emergency call out. Apart from events and building sites, these are used to keep businesses running when there's a failure of the mains water and the premises would otherwise have to close.

On New Year's Day they would be out picking up the loos used for New Year's Eve events.

It might take a bit of phoning depending on location but very far from impossible.
