Can I bar BT Ring Back?

BT ring back (press 5 after getting engaged tone) currently costs an annoying 36p per use, and presumably even more from 4 Jan 2011. I never use it, of course, but visiting relatives do. Is there any way of barring it?

Alternatively, is there any way of getting BT forced to warn, before any mention of pressing 5, what the charge is? Or arguing that the soothing 'There is usually a charge for this service' implies a reasonable charge, eg the 1p (at most) it costs BT to deliver this service?

Yes. Get Ring Back removed from your Calling Features. Contact BT Customer Services on 0800 800 150 or from a mobile use
    0330 123 4150

You can also bar your line from being able to use 1471-3 Call Return on missed incoming calls.

You can also bar your line from accepting 1471-3 Call Return i.e. if you phone someone and they're out, they won't be able to "Press 3 to return the call" but they will still hear your number.

According to BT.com BT 1471 – Dialling BT 1471 without using Call Return is free. The Call Return feature of BT 1471 costs a fixed fee of 16.5p inc VAT at today's rate.

    + 10.9p connection + 6.4p* per minute = 33.8p (rounded up to 34p) MINIMUM.

    * Weekday daytimes (unless on Unlimited Anytime Plan)
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks for the suggestion. But isn't that only to remove the Calling Feature of unlimited use of Ring Back for £2.59 a month? The only Calling Feature we currently have is (free) BT Privacy (including presentation of CLI).

    I suppose it might be.

The MSE answer is why are you letting visiting relatives use your phone - don't they have mobiles?
