HELP!No PC Sounds!!!

1 11 06

Can anyone help? Inadvertantly used ADD/REMOVE to delete an audio program and have NO sounds. the action cleared the Speaker icon from taskbar and also causes my Winamp player to issue Alert:
"BAD DIRECT SOUND DRIVER PLEASE install proper drivers or select another device in configuration Error code 8878000A". I also cannot increase volume on console for ASUSTEK dvd/audio player from 0%.

I do not have any cd-roms to make another installation as someone (now absent) made up this PC for me (legitimately) and cannot access net since 19/10 due to Fast 4BISCIT fiasco so cannot even update from Powerdvd or even Windows.

Curiously Help says that ADD/REMOVE does not clear from the Hard-drive but after lots of searching cannot see anything I can RE install. Am also finding SYSTEM CHECKS show CMAudio (?) as being "problem device".

How does a soundcard work? Does it come with the ASUS DVD E616PL/ASUS CRW-5232AS hardware? OR is it something via Windows?

Have no sounds at all and clueless how to sort this apart from getting expensive repair done. Surely if the soundcard device is still ok then there must be some software somewhere on the system to utilise?

ANY advice gratefully appreciated....

JJ

If you're on Win XP - click on the problem device and select 'roll back driver'.

If that doesnt work, goto the manufacturer's website and search for the drivers in the support/download section.
  • Right click My Computer and go to Propeties (This assumes windows XP)

Go to Hardware then Device Manager.

Scroll down this list and find Sound, Video and Game controllers.

If there is anything under there with a Yellow ! then right click on it and update driver, see if that does the trick.

It's a good chance you have a REAKTEK soundchip in your PC, so you can get the driver which covers all their sound cards (Mostly ONBOARD - which means its the connections close to where the Keyboard and USB ports are)

    https://www.realtek.com.tw
    Downloads section
and AC'97 Sound, choose the driver by selecting "Go" (There are 3 different servers)

Save this on your hard drive or desktop, and then double click to install, if you dont have a compatible soundcard, then it will just tell you - no harm done!
