Lanzarote/Tenerife et al.Is it all beer and chips

Hi
I can vouch for the north part of Tenerife as we have stayed many times in Puerto de la Cruz. It is a lovely traditional town with a good choice of restuerants and bars but unlike the sourthen resorts you do not get the "tea like mum makes" places. It is very popular with Spanish, German and the "slightly older" British tourist. The beach is black volcanic sand, there are shops to suit all ages and you feel safe walking around any time of the day or night. Getting around the town is very easy but if you want a taxi it is not more than 3/4 Euros to get you back to your hotel. Over the many years we have been going {both summer and winter} I can count on one hand the wet days we have had and would {and do} highly reccomend Puerto to anyone wanting a relaxing break away
I went to Puerto de la Cruz about 13 years ago with my family - rained every day!! Saying that it was only for about 1-2 hours and was still warm. This was the second week of January. Had snow on Mt Teide which was enough to block the roads.0 -
I have been to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote and it wasn't all beer and chips there, it was fairly quiet and laid back and we had nice food everywhere we went. Obvioulsy there was beer there but it wouldn't have been a holiday without it

We went to Tenerife for the forst time last February, and up until then had always been put off by the thought of beer and chip holidays.
We went because my uncle moved there, and within a day, we had fallen in love with the place.
We stayed in Chayofa, just outside Los Cristianos, every morning (bar one) we would awake to the view of La Gomera just appearing through the haze.
As someone else has said, Tenerife is one of the most beautiful places in Europe, and I would not hesitate to recommend it, provided you stay away from the English bars etc.
Hire a car and explore the island, you will have a ball. I can only think people who do not like it there, do not explore and take in the Canarian culture.0
