Can play music on line but not music and sounds stored on PC

I can play back sound online from Youtube etc. However I have recently found I cannot play back any music or sounds stored locally on my hard disk. I used to be able to. The music I cannot play back is mostly in mp3 format and the sounds are .wav files. Any ideas?
Just to add I have checked all the volume controls I can find and they are all set to med volume, none are mute and all the sound devices are reported as working normally.

Are you running Windows 7? You can adjust volume by application (e.g. one setting for Firefox, another for VLC, etc.). Check the volume levels while the (inaudible) sound is playing and hopefully you'll be able to crank it up again!0

What are you playing sounds back with ?? That might be broken or you have changed file associations .What happens when you click on a sound file .
Download VLC media player and try that .
