Does anyone have advice for my son?
He lives in furnished + rented accommodation and has a few items (e.g. guitar, Laptop, DVD player) of sufficient value to insure.
He estimates a total of < £3,000.
He's tried the two household insurance search sites recommended by Martin but finds that companies have a minimum contents cover of way above this figure.
I've suggested going to A-plan, a highstreet broker.
Any other tips, especially from people who've faced and solved a similar insurance problem, would be welcome.

There is a basic cost for having insurance basically, if you go for specialist product then generally you still have the same basic cost and you then lose the economies of scale. I would strongly suspect that going to specialist will be more expensive than getting the lowest price home insurance.
Is your son at university/ college? Some home insurers will cover kids possessions whilst they are away from home studying as standard. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

i agree with teh previous post- many insurers will add on an extension to a home-owners policy that they will cover their children while at University.
Some ocmpanies charge, others don't. Check with your insurer- you could save you son a small wedge of cash!
If not applicable, why doesn't he just get quotes from the mainstream insurers anyway? If they cover for say £15k cover, but he only needs £3k, then whats's the problem assuming the premium is low?
EDIT- Try https://www.homelet.co.uk
They covered me a while back in a furnished property and they let you specify a small amount of cover eg £2.500, £5.000 etc
