agree with looking in £ shops, instire, wilkos, tesco etc i always keep my eye out for lil crafty bits n bobs esp in the sales as my 4 yr old son loves anything arty ,crafty :)

i bought a lidded "childrens art storage box" for £1.50 from instore (think they still have them, they are red and blue in colour)

filled with loads of cheapy sticker sheets, crayons, gummed shapes, chalks ,mini note pads, paints, playdough, scissors etc for a few more £s ,then got a roll of drawing paper for 99p from bookeneds

You could make play dough there is a recipe on MSE somewhere.
I made my daughter a set years ago and I printed out eyes, noses, mouths, ears, moustaches and feet and added a packet of balloons and a balloon pump so that she could make balloon people. The features were on sticker paper. The feet are two side by side with a slot to fit the knot of the balloon into and need to be on stiff card.
I know there is a link on here to some colouring pages to download and print out somewhere too.
ELC do very cheap paintbrushes and scissors. We found the plastic handled metal bladed scissors were better as the plastic bladed ones were just too frustrating.
Glue sticks are much better than the liquid glue. More controllable.
If you get crayons, try and find wax crayons as some of the cheaper ones are plastic and virtually colourless . You can get crayon sharpeners which have plastic blades so they can't 'sharpen' their fingers.
Greaseproof paper can be tracing paper.
Can you tell we are an arty family

What about bags of homemade playdough. You can make scented ones using lemon essence, chocolate essence, peppermint essence. Another good one is mixing in mixed herbs and also glitter.

I made a load up for our toddler group and the older kids there (it was half term so big brothers and sisters turned up too) loved it. I used value salt, value plain flour, food colouring, cream of tartare, and various essences.

Pop them in cellphone bags and maybe include some cookie cutters.
  • Don't forget the cupboards, pasta can be used to make necklaces, you can paint it and glue glitter to it, salt dough can be made and baked and painted.
    Just a thouht.
I agree the £ shops are a great place to get brilliant craft items that are so much more expensive elsewhere, Bookworks have some great deals on things like coloured paper and card and small craft sets, I am sure the craft box will be great, keep us updated and let us know what you managed to put together.
