They operate the same policy as other retailers, that you have to be refunded back onto the original card.keith13672 wrote: »Secondly I could not find any mention on argos website under refund policies anything about debit cards and refunds
This is because the policy operates in almost every company that accepts cards - it is an anti-money laundering/fraud prevention technique and some companies are more rigorous than others.keith13672 wrote: »Thirdly I feel my privacy was intruded when I had to provide so much personal information which wass taken away out of my sight providing an obvious threat to data security
You handed it over, no DPA breach. Many shops ask for a bank statement if you have been double charged for the same transaction. I don't see what they can do with a lost of transactions on your statement to be honest.keith13672 wrote: »What should of happened and how do I handle furrther issues involving a card I no longer have?
Keith
I would say that on their till audits they should have your old card number in full. It is possible to refund to a cancelled card, but can take a while to re-credit back to your account.Best Regards

OK sorry this has happened and Welcome to MSE or the Parish.
It is normal to refund to the card that was used in the transaction, or use this card if an exchange is made. This is the retailler card issuer agreements.keith13672 wrote: »Here's where the problem starts!
We decided as part of an account controlling measure to just have one debit card on the joint account [mine] and destroy my wifes leaving her with just a cashpoint card.keith13672 wrote: »She told me to do this or a gift voucher was the only option.
If the card is not present, this is an acceptable form of refund, as the store would not give cash, it is not a cashpoint.keith13672 wrote: »Thirdly I feel my privacy was intruded when I had to provide so much personal information which wass taken away out of my sight providing an obvious threat to data security
Normal for a refund, to prevent fraud.
As for the alleged attitude of the manager, the shop assistant in the first place was only doing as instructed. I would question why you did not want a replacement? Apologies if one was nto available. I am sorry, but forkeith13672 wrote: »We decided as part of an account controlling measure to just have one debit card on the joint account [mine] and destroy my wifes leaving her with just a cashpoint card.
Your money management in the first place did not help the problems you encountered, though I would be grateful for the refund, although in vouchers, sometimes I would side with the shopkeeper as it takes two to tango and as my wife works in retail, I am angst at those that come in and abuse shop staff, either verbally or otherwise.
Oh, and Welcome to MSE. I am sorry, that in part, Freddie has not given you the answer you wanted to hear0 -
We chose not to have a replacement as it was a poor product.
My issue was the refund would of been going back to same account and no laundering could have taken place on a 25 pounds kids toy!
I still would like to know why they cant access a journal and refund from there [asssuming a receipt is present] in exceptional circumstances. I always have and always will endeavour to provide the same card receipt etc but this was just an unusual case and I cant find written procedures or legal rights so to speak.
I think a little logic and understanding goes a long way with customer service.
Thanks0 -
Accepted, but they could not refund to the card, hence the vouchers.keith13672 wrote: »We chose not to have a replacement as it was a poor product.
I am afraid that is the Merchant and Banking agreement dictate that part.keith13672 wrote: »My issue was the refund would of been going back to same account and no laundering could have taken place on a 25 pounds kids toy!
If it is compensation you are after, I am afraid Freddie cannot offer absolution in this case.keith13672 wrote: »I cant find written procedures or legal rights so to speak.
I would leave at the fact you got your refund, albeit in a roundabout way. Next time you decide the cards need ripping up, leave the thing in the back of the wardrobe for a month, just in case you need to do a refund.0 -
Merchants must refund to the original payment manner. This is part of their merchant services terms and is required for fraud and money laundering prevention methods.
The rest is your own personal circumstances and doesnt give you reason to criticise argos.0 -

Not the point though. £25 or £25000, they operate a completely correct policy to refund back to the original card.keith13672 wrote: »I still would like to know why they cant access a journal and refund from there [asssuming a receipt is present] in exceptional circumstances. The store may not have access to the journal/till records. However, if you write to their customer services or phone them, they can try and access the journals to find your transaction.Best Regards
