Can I Enable Fax Service On Win XP PC Without XP CD?

Hi,

SORRY IN ADVANCE IF MY REQUEST IS IN BREACH OF ANYTHING!

I wanted to enable the Fax Service on my Windows XP and was following Microsoft's Support page (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306550/) for guidance, and when doing so I was prompted by my PC to insert an XP CD, which I don't have as XP was installed on my PC by someone else at a price.

Is there any way for me to download the components that an XP CD will have to enable the FAX Service on my PC from the internet?

(By the way the XP on my PC is a genuine version, I can get hold of a non-genuine XP CD but not sure if it will cause any problems if I insert it when prompted during Fax configuration)

Thank you.

you will need a cd, or a friend with a cd.

Strictly speaking after updating the software, you should also re-apply the service pack or check for updates.

I am fairly confident that you can use the installation disc that you have as adding a component would not require any activation as such. This is obviously if your OS is already validated.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

    That bit actually worked. Thanks.

My PC doesn't have a built in Fax Modem though, so couldn't proceed any further:(

Anyone know the external bits I have to buy to Fax enable my PC?

Will the PC have to be connected to the phone socket via hard cable to send a fax, or can this be done wirelessly?

    Thanks.

Normally, you'd use a dial-up modem with faxing capabilities (I think most have this feature), but that would have to be plugged into your PC and attached to a phone line - I don't think you can do this wirelessly (maybe with some exotic kit).

But rather than actually send a fax from your PC, it might be easier/cheaper to use a service that converts a message (an email that you send to a certain address, say) into a fax, which it forwards on for you.

There's a few such services here:
