XD Card troubles

Hi There
I am hoping you can help me.
I have an Olympus 2GB XD card I have been using in my Fuji Camera. I even used it today without any problems.
I went to upload some pictures from it this evening, but the computer was saying there was no supported images available.
When I switch the camera on, it tells me to do one of two things, clean the terminals on the card, or format the card. I have gently cleaned the metal contact parts with a dry, soft cloth, and it still comes up with this error message.
The camera and card have suffered no knocks or trauma. It's stored in a hard protective case, and well out of reach of my enthusiastic little girl.
How can I restore this card without loosing any precious photos? I hope you can help me, as I would be so upset to lose these memories.
Obviously a quick google brings up lots of options to buy programmes to retrieve data, but can they do it? And if so, which programme is any good?
I hope someone can give me some hope.
Thanks for reading
