IBM Thinkpad Hard Drive compatibility

I've got an IBM Thinkpad 600E which had a 10Gb HDD. Coming back from Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, it seems to have taken a knock, and the HDD is now damaged and inoperable.
There are few of these original drives around (did see one listed at $700+ :eek:), so I'm trying to find a compatible model. Closest I can see is an IBM Travelstar 18Gb.
Physically the drive is the right size, and seems to have the correct IDE connection, but I'm not 100% that I can use it.

Anyone know if these will work in the 600E?

Have you tried IBM customer support? I hear they're pretty decent with enquiries...

The Thinkpad 600's will accept both 9.5mm and 12mm drives they need to be ide/ATA and not sata. Also the drive needs to be a laptop drive that measures 2.5" wide rather than a standard desktop drive which is 3.5"

I bought my last drive from Scan you dont need to stick to IBM drives either.

Cheers folks. It was just what L J has said I was trying to find out. I was aware of the physical attributes, but unsure of whether or not the 600 would accept other drives.

I pulled the ac lead out of my good lady's 600e last week :rolleyes: and messed up the 20gb and replaced with this from ebay. All fine so far. :beer:
