Where is the best place to sell jewellery

Options
My friend's mother, over the years, has given her several very expensive pieces of jewellery (handed down rather than bought specifically for my friend). They are not to my friend's taste, and although she has taken some pieces and had them remodelled, she'd really like to sell the others.

Where would be the best place for this - a specialist jewellery auction? Or good old ebay? Or a jewellers shop (thinking this is probably the worst place as they won't pay the value of the "piece" just the components).

Any advice or suggestions please?

Anywhere except ebay if they are decent pieces. She could always take them to a proper, old-fashioned high-street jewellers to have them appraised and ask their advice on the best way to realise a decent price for them.

If they're vintage items of good quality it might be an idea to try and find a reputable dealer or auction house.

Why not on e-bay may I ask? What you could do it take them to be valued and then put them on e-bay on a BIN price or perhaps even have a starting price that you would be happy to let them go for. If you are not in any rush to sell them and if they don't sell straight away on e-bay then you can relist them to your hearts content. Make sure you take several photos of them for e-bay AND for you to keep for reference purposes.

Would her mother appreciate for them to be sold? I understand she may not like them...but it would never cross my mind to sell something my mum has given me; it's an heirloom, isn't it? Unless I was in absolute dire needs, and even then...
I find the idea of selling them on Ebay even worse, tbh. There's more to it than commercial value surely?

She's not talking about selling all the pieces though is she? Only some of them and if she wants to then surely it's her decision? I personally, would not sell anything my parents have ever given me as it all has sentimental value. I have even kept a map my Dad drew for me to get to my uncle's house. This may sounds silly but he had literally come round from a BRAIN operation about two hours earlier so was pretty major!
