just wondering if anybody has purchased one of these because ive heard that they drop the quality in the surround sound is this true. can anybody confirm or deny this.

I don't think there's a clear yes or no answer. It depends on a number of factors, including length and quality of optical cable, power output of the transmitting device and sensitivity of each of the receivers.
When you get below the threshold of reliable reception at either of the receivers, you will start to generate errors, and when these become more numerous you will start to hear high-frequency clicks or hissing. Quite often the receiver will have an error counter, and will inhibit sound output above a certain limit, in which case you will get longer sound dropouts.0
