Scrape the loose stuff out and coat the pipe with a bitumen or similar paint to stop future corrosion from expanding or affecting the new screed around it

    ok, will do.

i will try and cut most of the pipe away if i can. the problem is the pipe runs under the hall way towards where the meter will be under the stairs

i am only going to cut from the front room as that is the only one that seems to be at fault

the back room and hallway is all good it seems

    thanks for the help

my kitchen and dining room is 100% like this!!!..I've got vinyl tiles on top and never lifting them again, lifted 4 a fortnight ago and it took 4 hours and I made a massive hole!..it came off in flat bits so I put them back and put new tiles down..from now on I'll just tile on top of the old vinyl..!

I'm actually quite worried now, going to show DH this later..thanks for the post!

    it is very worrying poppyolivia

but the important thing is you investigate it.

i am confident i don't have this problem but i still have my doubts

    thanks

Mine only broke up because it was almost like it was superglued on (the tiles we put down)..the tiles were coming off in TINY bits..the tiles we put down were put straight onto what looks like brown tiles then the rubble stuff underneath..I'm wondering if to just leave it instead of digging about? Its only because I saw your thread and had a mini heart attack when I saw your pics (looks identical to mine) if I hadn't come on here I would be none the wiser!lol ..You know what? There is always something isn't there?..I'm getting abit fed up now!..new builds all the way!

    cheers again!

i would check to see what is under one of them, you can always fill it back later if it is nothing

but it could be something, ignorance isn't always bliss, i wish it was. i am the worst worrier there is and sometimes worry when i shouldn't but in this instance that is sometimes a blessing.

i would have a look and see, take photos and let people who have more experience know so they can give their opinion

hopefully it is nothing, it is difficult to know when we have no experience of this

It would take me 30mins to take one tile off..lol..will have to look into it though, last time I took four off, the brown flat tile like surface was cracked under my tile...(I'm hoping this was from the tiles I took off)..but under that it was like dusty crumbling concrete..kinda like someone came along with a huge hammer and hit it.

But other than that the surface say 8 metres by 4 metres there is only one lump in a tile.

it is difficult to say. it could even be a thin layer of creed or tile adhesive that is crumbling. but i would get someone who knows the different to look and advise

your floor has lasted 80 years and has served you well, it may well need replacing when you have the funds but for now removing the loose, brush the patches and edges with diluted PVA and patch with sharp sand/cement approx 3.5/1 mix. This remedy will last you a few more years easily.
