Annoying Pop Ups

Hi

Wonder if someone out there can help with a problem with pop ups. Whenever we click on a Google link it directs us to another page rather than the one we clicked on. When we click a second time it takes us to the correct page. It has laso now started to happen when we are filling in forms on any page. At first I thought it was a virus on my wifes computer but it has started to do it on my work one as well (but not when I am at work, only at home) and we have just bought our children a new desktop for Christmas and it was doing it on that today (only the third time it has been on). We are running Avast on both my wife and home desktop and F-Secure on my work machine and nothing is been found when I run a virus scan. I have also run Maleware Bytes and that has found nothing either.

I am wondering whether it could be our router (D Link DSL-2640R) that is causing the problem but don't know enough about them to be sure.

Also on another note I have an old desktop that I am wanting to get rid of (probably on Freecycle but maybe give to charity if I can find one that will take it) and I want to take all the software off and make sure it is clean before I do but the machine came with no discs so don't know how to go about this - wonder if anyone could help on that to.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Mike

If it has been used for online banking, you may want to remove the hard drive and keep it
  • It normally goes first to a site called information-seeking.com and then heads off to a search portal but on occassions does end up on an adult site. When it clicks through as we click on links in other pages at the moment it is going to http://213.155.17.40/offer/christmaspage.htm (it did that when I clicked on mse front page to get back to the forums.)
  • Try a search on C:\ for all files containing 213.155.17.40 and see if it brings up any files. As it appears to be "spreading" I would not log in to anything until it's sorted. It could be your router, but more likely something spreading from machine to machine.

    Hi

Wonder if someone out there can help with a problem with pop ups.

You would do well to follow the advice in this post here:- http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=39690190&postcount=2
  • Try a search on C:\ for all files containing 213.155.17.40 and see if it brings up any files. As it appears to be "spreading" I would not log in to anything until it's sorted. It could be your router, but more likely something spreading from machine to machine.

Did this search and it found nothing (although it did not search hidden files and folders). Am running Malwarebytes at the moment (have updated it to the latest version) and will post the log file when done.
  • I have run both malwarebytes and hijack this on my wifes laptop and the log files are here:

    Is the problem cured?

You have a lot of overlapping security software installed, that may be slowing the machine to a crawl, avast + malwarebytes manual scans should be sufficient, as you have found no one scanner finds everything

  • Hi

I have removed all the other spyware programs, etc but the problem is still happening. I am about to go out but will run malwarebytes again when I get back in to see if there is anything else. The other progams where on as I had followed the sticky about how to remove malware and they were recommended programs. However, when I did it on my work computer it still did not work properly afterwards and I could not get my wifes computer to go into "safe mode".

I do not understand how my new computer could also be doing the same, as apart from being hardwired into the router none of the machines are connected and there is not a home network set up (mainly as I don't know how to do one, but if anyone can point me to a guide that would be great as I would like to be able to print from the laptop whilst it is connected to the new desktop). We do have an external hard drive that we share between machines but that hasn't yet been connected upto the new one (and until I solve the problem I won't be). I will also scan this later one to check there is nothing on there.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

    Mike
